Project Brief
Project Brief
1. PRELIMINARY
The Project highway connects four districts viz. Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer
&Jodhpur in Rajasthan. The project highway starts at the junction with existing National Highway-
911at Attarabad (682 RD) and ends at village Bajju (RD 931) at the junction with State Highway-
87A (MDR-37). Project highway passes through Indra Gandhi canal. Total road length of the
Project Highway is 75.913 Km., which startsat Km 136.537to Km 212.45 Birdhwal-Puggal-Bajju
road and is maintained by BRO. Existing road width is of intermediated Lane specification.
1.2. Locality. Road Birdhwal-Puggal-Bajju takes off from NH-62 (Suratgarh-Bikaner road) at Km
153.600 (Birdhwal) and runs parallel to Indira Gandhi main canal on the left bank at an average
distance ofapprox 150 m for a length of 212.209 Km. Road stretch from Km 107.200 to Km
136.537 was handed over to NHAI on 29 Aug 2018 for improvement under BharatmalaPariyojna
and its widening work has been completed. Presently road length of 182.872 Km i.e. from
Birdhwal Km 0.00 to Km 107.20 and Km 136.537 to Km 212.209 is with BRO. The total length of
182.872 Km of Road Birdhwal-Pugal-Bajju is of IW specifications. This road is strategically
important being an alternate route to NH-62.
2. EXISTING ALIGNMENT
2.1. History. The Road Birdhwal – Pugal – Bajju was originally a service road to Rajasthan
Main Canal which was constructed by IGNP. After completion of Canal work, this road was
abandoned by IGNP. This road being a strategically important link to the border areas was
considered useful from the operational point of view. Accordingly, the road was taken over from

IGNP for its improvement and maintenance by BRO in May 1986. This road takes off from NH-62
Suratgarh-Bikaner Road at KM 153.600 (Birdhwal) and runs parallel to main canal on the left bank
at an average distance of approx. 150 m away from it. This road is strategically important being an
alternate route to NH-62 Suratgarh-Bikaner Road.
2.2. Climate. The area receives scarce rainfall and the average annual rainfall in the region is
20 cm. The rainfall data recorded in the past is attached. The temperature in this area ranges from
49o C in summer (Jun) to 5o C in winter (Jan).
2.3. Soil Classification. The soil in the region generally comprises of silty sand with CBR value
up to 7%. Though the road experiences less rainfall, due to the poor soil characteristics, the
embankments are susceptible to rain cuts due to fast discharge of surface runoff. Similarly, water
stagnation is a common phenomenon during rains on sag stretches, which deteriorate the
pavement. Therefore, adequate cross as well as longitudinal drainage facilities are required on this
road.
2.4. Traffic. The road being located in plain/desert area connected by higher specification roads
and use of heavy axle traffic for conveyance of Army eqpt, the existing crust thickness and
carriageway width are considered inadequate. The average CVD on this road is 365 Nos out of
which 303 Nos (83.01%) are Heavy axle load truck trailers for transportation of tank etc.
2.5. River Crossing. No River crossing exists on the entire alignment. But Indra Gandhi canal
has been crossing at Km155.940, Km172.780, Km 189.940 &Km 190.320 on this alignment.
2.7. Profile. Existing alignment of B-P-B road, originates from Km 153.600 of NH-62 Suratgarh -
Bikaner road at Birdhwal. The proposed alignment traverses through civil/private/forest land.
There are several village roads connected to the existing road. The alignment is having steep
gradients (rise and fall) at certain locations. The site distance is unsafe at few locations. It is found
feasible to develop the existing alignment with improvement of geometrics of the road to meet IRC
stipulations and the user requirement.
3.1 General Soil Test Data. The CBR value for stretch from Km136.537 to Km212.450
variesfrom7.06 to 8.46 percent.CBR value of 7% has been considered for pavement design.
3.2. Earth filling to the tune of 353014.55cum is involved in this work. The quantity of earth work
excavation is 728555.40cum. Therefore, the quantity of soil required for embankment filling will be
available from excavated quantity. However, the same has to be carried to the embankment sites
through Tippers. Therefore, there is no requirement to extract soil from Borrow pits. The excess
earth balance from embankment filling have been proposed to disposed off at the locations of high
embankment along the road side within RoW.

4. DRAINAGE
4.1. General Drainage Pattern, HFL, Water Table, Seepage Flows, etc. The proposed
alignment does not cross any natural streams and also the area falls under low rainfall region
having rainfall upto 200 mm (rainfall data enclosed) but in several places IGNP Distributary field
drain crosses the road.To avoid the damage to the road and balancing the surface drainage, cross
drainage works in the form of RCC Box cell culverts 2.0 x 2.0 m, 4.00 x 3.00and 6.0x4.0 m are
proposed for surface runoff of water and IGNP field drain crossing the road as per IRC SP:13-
2004.
5. MATERIALS
5.1. Borrow Area of Soil with Soil Properties for Embankment as well as Sub Grade.
Adequate soil will be available, however same to be incorporated in the work after ascertaining the
suitability after carrying out necessary tests, from the formation cutting and balance requirement, if
any, can be met out within RoW.
