Emotional Intelligence Self-Reflective Essay

Introduction
Emotional intelligence plays a significant role in personal and professional development.
Emotional intelligence consists of regulating an individual’s emotion. Emotional intelligence
involves making intelligent decisions using specific skills for negative feelings or a situation
in order to generate positive emotion. In the reflective essay, I will be focusing on reflecting
the learnings of four weeks by emphasizing the concept of emotional intelligence. The EI
reflective journal highlights different areas such as self-awareness and self-management. The
reflective journal focuses on using frameworks of emotional intelligence such as Genos
model and Goleman’s model. Both the models feature emotional intelligence through self-
awareness and self-regulation. Genos mainly focuses on emotional intelligence in the
workplace and the key competencies required for practicing emotional intelligence in the
workplace. On the other hand, Goleman’s model highlights the fundamental components of
emotional intelligence. The reflective essay provides evidence from survey to reflect on self-
awareness and self-management along with implications for future career.

Evidence of Growth of Self-Awareness and Engagement

During the first week I have learned about the Genos model of EI competence. The Genos
model of EI competence highlights Self-awareness as a key component. The model also
emphasizes various other key factors such as awareness of others, authenticity, emotional
reasoning, self-management and positive influence. The Genos model helped me to have a
clear understanding of EI components to become emotionally aware during critical situations
(Biradar & Shindhe, 2023). I have learned the importance of emotionally intelligent
workplace behavior. I have also understood from the course lesson that self-aware individuals
perform better in the workplace that leads to a high level of job satisfaction. The benefits of
being self-aware has also been learned from the course such as confidence, increased ability
to make decisions, creativity, and communication (Lima, et al., 2022).

To successfully test my EI competencies, especially self-awareness, I have taken Genos

model assessment to assess my level of self-awareness and other key competencies of
emotional intelligence. The result of self-awareness has been provided in below screen
(London, et al., 2022).

3
Figure 1: Self-awareness test result

The self-awareness assessment using the Genos model tested my ability based on three key
areas such as awareness about the way I feel, awareness of impact of emotions on my
thinking, impact of my feelings on the way I interact with others. The level of importance,
level of demonstration and difference have been presented in the test results. All the three key
areas are highly essential for demonstrating self-awareness in workplace (Karimi, et al.,
2021).

For the first area i.e., demonstrating awareness of how I feel, I scored an average score of 3.2.
The difference among the importance and demonstrated level has certain gaps that shows I
need to improve the awareness of the way I feel. Demonstrating the awareness of the impact
of emotion on my thinking, I have scored good but still it needs to be improved further.
Impact of my feelings on interaction with others was good. Overall, my self-awareness
assessment shows that I need certain improvements on my capabilities to completely
demonstrate my self-awareness. Even though I have demonstrated my feelings effectively,
consistency between the behavior is still lacking (Firmansyah & Aima, 2019).

From the self-assessment test results and learnings from weeks, I understood the importance
of understanding my own emotions and their impact on my thinking and interaction with
others. I have also understood that asking others about feedback on my behavior is necessary
to improve myself. Being aware of others and authenticity are some other areas I need to
improve further. The Goleman’s model helped me to understand how emotional intelligence
shapes leadership success (Data & Mamo, 2024).

Evidence of Growth of Self-Management and Engagement

The Goleman’s model emphasizes self-awareness as an ability of an individual to think
before acting and regulating one’s own emotions to redirect the challenges. I have also

4
learned from Gardner’s theory that people are not born with emotional intelligence and each
individual can develop their emotional intelligence skills to excel in their career. I have also
learned from Goleman’s model that self-management is a cognitive control in which I can use
my intelligence to control my emotions. The modern workplaces are highly stressful and self-
management is an essential skill to be developed to handle negative emotions (Kim & Wee,
2020).

The self-management assessment results from Genos model have been presented in below
screen.

Figure 2: Self-Management test results

The self-management test results tested my skills by focusing on various areas. The test
results show that I have demonstrated an excellent self-management skill by responding
effectively during stressful situations. I have also demonstrated positive emotions in the
assessment. I am capable of adopting different and changing situations which I have

5
understood from the self-management assessment. I constantly improve myself to build a
strong emotional intelligence and self-management skills (Dhanpat, et al., 2020).

Even though I have demonstrated my strengths of self-management through the assessment

results, the results also helped me to understand the areas I need to further focus in order to
gain various self-management capabilities. Responding effectively to the criticism obtained
from others should be focused further because I have scored low in this area. Time
management is a very important self-management ability which I need to focus on further to
successfully manage times by setting deadlines and keeping track of schedule. Controlling
anger at work is another important capability to be focused. Since I am not excellent at my
anger management skill, I need to further focus on this area to successfully manage my
emotions at my workplace (Wheeler, et al., 2020).

The test results also analyzed other aspects of self-management from the Genos model.
Positive influence i.e., influencing others in a positive way while avoiding workplace
conflicts also need to be focused. Conflict management needs to be improved in future to
manage workplace conflicts. Providing useful support to others, helping peers to handle
stressful situations, creating a positive workplace environment, and positively influencing the
way others feel are my strengths and key capabilities under self-management. The weekly
learnings helped me to understand the strategies of self-management using Goleman’s model.
The capabilities include, self-regulation, self-discipline, cognitive control, emotional
maturity, and emotionally adjusted.

Implications for Future Career

Developing emotional intelligence with self-awareness and self-management capabilities will
help me to shape my career and to succeed in various aspects of my professional life.

From the Genos model, I have learned the strategies for developing self-awareness and the
importance of self-awareness in the workplace. I have also learned the importance of self-
management from Goleman’s model. The self-management ability enables one to handle
workplace stress effectively, self-motivation, self-confidence and managing time effectively
(Ghali & Miri, 2018).

Emotional intelligence will help me to effectively communicate in my workplace, by

allowing me to communicate my feelings and thoughts. Emotional intelligence also will help
me to understand the other’s emotions in the workplace to communicate based on others’

6
emotions to create a positive workplace. Navigating through interpersonal conflicts is also
easier through self-awareness and self-management skills. The capabilities will significantly
handle any workplace conflicts. Conflicts are unavoidable in a workplace setting. I will
practice effective conflict management by demonstrating emotional intelligence to create a
positive workplace culture (Gautam, 2021).

I believe that successful leadership involves the ability to motivate and inspire others. During
my professional life, I will demonstrate my self-awareness and self-management skills to set
an example and inspire others. I will focus on developing emotional skills and key
capabilities of emotional intelligence in my followers to help them inspire others and to
create a positive workplace. I will demonstrate authenticity, emotional reasoning, awareness
of others, and resilience to empower others by creating a culture of trust. I can lead the team
with self-awareness, empathy and integrity throughout my professional career (Sfetcu, 2020).

Decision making is an important aspect that needs to be focused in career development. I will
focus on demonstrating enhanced decision-making during my professional life through
emotional intelligence skills. Decision making will be a significant area. I will apply my self-
awareness and self-management skills to make enhanced decisions. Considering the emotions
of other employees in the workplace decision-making is an essential part which I will
demonstrate through my emotional intelligence. I will apply the strategies and capabilities
learned from Genos model and Goleman’s model to successfully improve my ability on self-
awareness and self-management by building strong emotional intelligence skills. I will utilize
journaling as a strategy for developing my self-management skill in future as it helps to
identify my feelings. Reflective thinking will help me to identify the situations and to make
effective decisions in my workplace. I will also focus on implementing on the sport strategies
and mindfulness based on situations to successfully handle my emotions and others in my
career (Chaidi, 2022).

Conclusion
To conclude, the self-assessment and reflective journey was highly transformative which
helped me to identify my key strengths and weaknesses in the area of self-awareness and self-
management. I will focus on demonstrating the impact of emotions on others and learning
other’s emotions and turning it into a positive one. I will also work in improving my response
to criticism obtained from others. The Genos model and Goleman’s model served as a
foundation for understanding the key aspect of emotional intelligence. I have assessed self-

7
awareness and self-management skills where I have demonstrated strong emotional
intelligence capabilities. The strengths identified from Genos self-assessment test will be
applied in my career to handle the critical situations with emotional intelligence skill. The
implications of key skills mentioned in Genos model and Goleman’s model helped to
understand the implications of my future career. I will continue to improve my emotional
intelligence skills through journaling and on the go strategies learned from the course to
contribute to career and organizational success.
