Grade Level: 2, 3, and 4

Time Allocation: 60 minutes

LESSON/TOPIC:
Living and Non-living Things

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

present findings with 90% accuracy and participation.

Motivation:
Activity: “Living or Not?”

The teacher will show real objects or flashcards (e.g., dog, ball, flower, chair). Learners will
clap once if the item is living, and stomp once if it is non-living. This quick activity will
stimulate interest and activate prior knowledge.

Lesson Proper:
1. Introduction/Discussion (10 minutes)
- Teacher discusses the characteristics of living things (movement, growth, reproduction,
response to stimuli, breathing, etc.).
- Visual aids will be used for better understanding.

2. Activity/Group Work (15 minutes)

- Grade 2: Worksheet activity – encircle living things from a set of images.
- Grade 3: Sort objects/pictures into living or non-living groups; write two characteristics.
- Grade 4: Complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting living and non-living
things. Prepare a short group presentation.

3. Sharing/Reporting (10 minutes)

- Each group presents their output.
- Teacher facilitates brief discussion and gives feedback.

Assessment:
- Grade 2: Picture quiz – Color only the living things.
- Grade 3: Matching type – Match objects to their correct category and explain why.
- Grade 4: Group presentation – Use rubric to assess content, clarity, and participation.

Sample Questions:
- What makes a dog a living thing?
- Can a rock move or grow? Why is it non-living?
- How are living and non-living things similar or different?

Assignment:
- Grade 2: Draw 3 living and 3 non-living things found at home. Label them.
- Grade 3: Write a short paragraph comparing a real plant to a plastic one.
- Grade 4: Interview a family member. List 5 living and 5 non-living things they see daily and
state how they differ.
