INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES :
1. SECTION-A is COMPULSORY consisting of TEN questions carrying T WO marks
each.
2. SECTION-B contains FIVE questions carrying FIVE marks each and students
have to attempt any FOUR questions.
3. SECTION-C contains T HREE questions carrying T EN marks each and students
have to attempt any T WO questions.

SECTION-A

1. Write briefly :

(a) Define the term ‘void ratio’.

(b) Write a functional equation for specific gravity, water content, void ratio and degree
of saturation.

(c) Define liquid limit.

(d) Define the term effective stress and total stress.

(e) What is Darcy’s law?

(f) What do you mean by quick sand condition?

(g) What is the difference between compaction and consolidation?

(h) List various methods of determining the shear strength of soils.

(i) Define optimum moisture content and maximum dry density.

(j) What do you mean by face failure and toe failure?

SECTION-B

2. How will you find field density from sand replacement method?

3. Give details of BIS soil classification and state how the gradation influences the
engineering properties of soil?

4. Discuss in detail the constant head method for determining the permeability of soil.

5. Describe the method of determining the shear strength of soil by unconfined compression
test.

6. Explain the standard proctor’s test for determining OMC and maximum dry density.

SECTION-C

7. Calculate the co- efficient of permeability of a soil sample 5 cm in height and 50cm2 in
cross-sectional area, if a quantity of water equal to 430ml passed down in 10 minutes,
under an effective, constant head of 40cm. on over drying the test specimen has mass of
499g. Taking the specific gravity as 2.65, calculate the seepage velocity of water during
the test.

8. What do you mean by stability of slopes explain various types of slopes and their failure
mechanisms?

9. Explain in detail Terzaghi’s theory of consolidation and concept of various consolidation


characteristics.
