A. Educational Foundations
Teachers should have a solid understanding of educational foundations-subjects and disciplines that
have important contribution to the understanding of education as a field of study and educational
processes. These subjects and disciplines are as follows: History of Education, Philosophy, Legal
Foundations of Education, Sociological and Anthropological Foundations of Education, and Educational
Psychology. Over the years, these disciplines and fields have contributed several theories, ideas, laws,
and principles to enrich education as a field of study. The following are some standards that teachers
need to know in the area of Educational Foundations:
Literatures on the history of education would tell us that the Greeks, the Romans, the Egyptians, and
even the ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Persia, China, and other areas of the world have
contributed a lot in the development of educational ideas. In the Philippines, the educational system of
the pre-Spanish Filipinos, the Roman Catholic Church during the Spanish period and the Protestant
Churches, during the American Commonwealth, have contributed to the development of Philippine
education. The Americans also established the public school system in the country. There are many
other events in history that shaped our education system even to this day. Teachers need to learn,
reflect, and unlearn from history. They should develop critical minds and historical literacy to make
education more relevant and responsive to the needs of the people and communities.
2. Analyze educational philosophies, theories, and researches on education. Teachers should learn how
to analyze and interpret different educational philosophies. Educational philosophies serve as a guide in
making any curricular and instructional decisions. They also influence the beliefs and behaviors of
teachers as well as shape their personalities, teaching styles, and values.
Teachers also need to understand the different educational theories and apply and interpret them in
teaching. These theories guide teachers in engaging students in meaningful learning. They provide
alternative solutions and explanations to educational issues and concerns. In the same manner, teachers
need to be updated with latest researches in the field of education and from allied

enroll in graduate and postgraduate courses not for promotion purposes but to improve their
knowledge and skills. There are currently several graduate schools in the country that are diploma mills-
that is, they do not offer quality graduate and postgraduate education. Teachers should be encouraged
to take graduate courses in recognized centers of excellence. Their thesis and diploma should determine
their expertise and specialization in their chosen fields.Remember this: Teacher's Reflection
Teachers need to develop a certain degree of expertise on different domains to perform all their duties
and responsibilities in the school and in the whole education system effectively.
Educational Foundations Teachers need to understand how educational foundations, like psychology,
philosophy, sociology, history, and legal studies, influence the educational process of teaching and
learning.

Diversity of Learners
The content of the National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS, 2007), as a national program
of the DepEd, CHED, and the Teacher Education Council (TEC), identified necessary competencies that all
teachers should possess. These competencies are considered in developing curriculum standards for
pre-service and in-service teacher education in the country.Table 1. CHED-TEC-DepEd National
