Class Notes Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some organisms convert sunlight into food using chlorophyll, represented by the equation 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight -> C6H12O6 + 6O2. It consists of two main stages: light-dependent reactions that produce ATP and NADPH, and the Calvin Cycle that converts CO2 to glucose. This process is crucial as it produces oxygen and forms the foundation of the food chain.

CLASS NOTES: PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Definition:

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to

synthesize foods with the help of chlorophyll.

Equation:

6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight -> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Stages:

1. Light-dependent Reactions

- Occur in the thylakoid membranes

- Involve production of ATP and NADPH

2. Calvin Cycle (Light-independent Reactions)

- Occur in the stroma

- Use ATP and NADPH to convert CO2 to glucose

Importance:

- Produces oxygen

- Basis of the food chain
