Discipline: Chemical Engineering

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The shipbuilding industry has evolved significantly over the past few decades, integrating
advanced technologies and interdisciplinary approaches to meet the growing demands for
efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance. As a Chemical Engineer, my involvement
in shipbuilding projects has encompassed material selection, corrosion control, fuel system
optimization, and environmental management. This report delves into the multifaceted role
of chemical engineering in shipbuilding, highlighting experiences and lessons learned, with
a particular focus on innovations from South Korea—a global leader in shipbuilding.

2.0 PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Title: Construction of a 174,000 m³ LNG Carrier
Client: [Client's Name]
Location: Ulsan Shipyard, South Korea
Duration: [Start Date] – [End Date]
Ship Specifications:
- Length: 299 meters
- Breadth: 46 meters
- Gross Tonnage: 113,000 GT
- Propulsion: Dual-fuel diesel-electric (DFDE) engines
- Cargo Containment System: Mark III Flex membrane system

3.0 SCOPE OF WORK

As a Chemical Engineer, my responsibilities included:
- Material Selection: Evaluating and selecting materials resistant to marine corrosion and
suitable for cryogenic temperatures.
- Corrosion Control: Implementing strategies to mitigate corrosion, including coatings and
cathodic protection systems.
- Fuel System Optimization: Designing fuel handling and storage systems compatible with
LNG and compliant with safety standards.
- Environmental Management: Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations,
including emissions control and waste management.
- Quality Assurance: Overseeing the quality control of chemical processes and materials
used during construction.

4.0 MATERIAL SELECTION AND CORROSION CONTROL

4.1 Material Selection:
The harsh marine environment necessitates the use of materials with high corrosion
resistance and mechanical strength.

4.2 Corrosion Control Measures:

- Protective Coatings: Applied advanced epoxy-based coatings to ballast tanks and external
hull surfaces.
- Cathodic Protection: Installed sacrificial anodes in ballast tanks to prevent galvanic
corrosion.
- Innovative Materials: Incorporated POSCO’s POSEIDON500 steel offering over 40%
improved corrosion resistance.

5.0 FUEL SYSTEM DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

5.1 LNG Fuel System:
- Cryogenic Handling, Safety Systems, and Regulatory Compliance under IGF Code.

5.2 Emissions Control:

- Onboard Carbon Capture and alternative fuels such as ammonia in line with IMO 2023
GHG reduction strategy.

6.0 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Environmental considerations included waste management, water treatment systems, and
monitoring emissions to protect worker health and the marine environment.

7.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL

Ensuring material integrity involved material testing (tensile, impact), process validation
(welding procedures), and inspection regimes.

8.0 CHALLENGES AND MITIGATION STRATEGIES

Challenges included material availability, technological integration, and adapting to
regulatory changes. These were addressed through supplier diversification, staff training,
and flexible design.

9.0 LESSONS LEARNED

Lessons included the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, the need for continual
innovation, and early integration of environmental concerns.
10.0 CONCLUSION
Chemical engineering is central to material science, environmental compliance, and system
design in shipbuilding. South Korea’s innovations underscore the importance of modern
approaches in advancing global shipbuilding.
