The MDGs helped focus global efforts and led to progress in many areas, especially in reducing poverty
and improving access to education and healthcare. They were succeeded by the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) in 2015 for a more comprehensive approach to global development.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in
2015 as a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by the year 2030. They build on the
progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader, covering environmental, social,
and economic development.

8. Decent Work and Economic Growth – Promote jobs and economic growth.
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities – Make cities inclusive and sustainable.
16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – Promote justice and inclusive institutions.
17. Partnerships for the Goals – Strengthen global cooperation to achieve the goals.
