Functions of the Urinary Bladder – Flowcharts

1 Urine Storage

Stores urine, preventing continuous leakage and allowing voluntary control of urination.

Bladder expands as urine accumulates, adapting to increasing volume.

Rugae flatten, and bladder wall thins to accommodate more urine.

2️⃣Regulated Urine Expulsion (Micturition Reflex)


Controls contraction of detrusor muscle and relaxation of sphincters for urine release.

Stretch receptors detect bladder distension (300–400 mL of urine).

Triggers reflex contraction of bladder wall and relaxation of internal sphincter.

Prevents urine from flowing back into the ureters, reducing infection risk.
