Functions of the Urinary Bladder – Flowcharts

1 Urine Storage
1️⃣
Stores urine, preventing continuous leakage and allowing voluntary control of urination.

⬇️

Bladder expands as urine accumulates, adapting to increasing volume.

⬇️

Rugae flatten, and bladder wall thins to accommodate more urine.

2️⃣Regulated Urine Expulsion (Micturition Reflex)

Controls contraction of detrusor muscle and relaxation of sphincters for urine release.

⬇️

Stretch receptors detect bladder distension (300–400 mL of urine).

⬇️

Triggers reflex contraction of bladder wall and relaxation of internal sphincter.

⬇️

Voluntary relaxation of external sphincter allows urine expulsion.

3️⃣Prevention of Backflow
Prevents urine from flowing back into the ureters, reducing infection risk.

⬇️

The trigone region keeps ureteral openings compressed as bladder fills.

⬇️

Prevents reflux of urine into the ureters, protecting kidneys from infections.
4️⃣Bladder Expansion & Adaptability
Allows urine storage without significant pressure increase.

⬇️

Rugae flatten and bladder wall stretches.

⬇️

Accommodates varying urine volumes without immediate urge to urinate.

5️⃣Neural Control of Urination

Regulated by the pontine micturition center and parasympathetic nervous system.

⬇️

Stretch receptors activate parasympathetic nerves when bladder is full.

⬇️

Muscarinic receptors trigger detrusor muscle contraction.

⬇️

Urine is expelled through coordinated muscle relaxation and contraction.
