Introduction of Clean computing

Electronics manufacturing and disposals of it components is frequently used

within all the industries. Such products like batteries, computers and power
suppliers are known examples.
It is necessary for everyone living in this world to be aware of climatic change
and global emissions which arises from industrialization through the
manufacture, designing and disposal of computers waste and other electronics
peripherals. These will tends to have a disastrous effects towards humanity in the
future negatively if precautions or counter measures are not taken seriously in
time. All of us will suffer from serious health problems when exposed to such
condition that have to be controlled. This is due to the toxic content present in
their components like in batteries, printers and rest of machines. Several workers
working on the industries have to be concerned about their safety. A computer is
about 17% lead, copper, zinc, mercury, and cadmium; 23% is plastic, 14% is
aluminum, and 20% is iron Lead is found in a cathode ray tube (CRT) display, and
on all of the printed circuit boards and most expansion cards. Many of these
computer materials can containing such elements can be recovered with others
and re-used in order to reduce the cost for industries through recycling. The
electrical consumption of the computer has to be taken into considerations in
order to save energy and cost. The extend use of excess or numerous computer
equipment tends to increase the cost to people. In case of loss of data caused by
accidents like power failures and computer malfunctioning which becomes very
difficult to retrieve it back. Hence virtualization is necessary in order to render
backup easier and prevent the need of using a lot of computer peripherals
through it virtual services. Computing remains encouraged in this world but has
to be regulated for our environmental sake.

Problem statement
Computers are harmful, because of it toxic volatile chemical content present which is absorbed (felt)
by your body through the lungs. Generated computer components causes serious health hazards
particularly those who are exposed to it. Hence so many things that we use in our modern society is
having the negative impact on our environment. Toxic substances contained within the computers
like Lead, Chromium and Mercury being inhaled by our lungs can cause severe injuries to our body
causing lung infection, serious brain damage and others. All this harmful toxic chemicals and
substances can easily be transferred from one individual and organism to another through the food
chain.

The main impact of modern technology around the world is growing rapidly but
concerns about our health hazards and climatic change has to be taken into considerations for our
safety.

CLEAN COMPUTING

This project studies on designing, manufacturing, and disposing computers and it peripheral in order
to reduce their environmental impacts. This concerns on how computers are designed and
manufactured with no environmental impact.

Objectives of the project

-Improve the design, structure and usage of computers within the environment.

- Minimize the wastes produced during the manufacturing of computers to reduce the environmental
impact of these activities.

-Sensibilze people on our environmental safety during the manufacturing and consumption of
modern computers and IT devices.

-Improve the energy efficiency of computers and reduce it electrical consumption

-Encourage the recycling of computers and IT equipment

Scope of study
Clean computing is important because it promotes our environmental awareness on the growth of
Modern computer technologies. This project describes the right way of designing systems in order to
reduce it negative impact on our health, reducing electronic and paper wastage and save our
electrical consumption in this world. They are several methods, tools and techniques required to be
done in order to bring out positive results towards our safety and health while lowering the C02
emissions within the atmosphere.

Methodology
They are various methods or techniques of clean computing which is written as follows .
A) Virtualization of the Network resources

Virtualization is the creation of the virtual machine including hardware, computer

network resources and storage devices acting like the real computer with an
operating system. For example a computer bearing an OS(Operating System) like
Windows can host a virtual computer running Linux, Macintosch and other as
Operating System. The software running on the virtual machine is different than
the software running on the physical machine hence they are known through
their distinction as guest and host. Such method is being handled by the virtual
manager being installed on the computer .

The data being stored by the virtual machine is found in the flat file which
represent the hard disk capacity of the PC Hence virtual machine uses virtual disk
for their storage on every operations being performed . Snapshots is simply
copying the current image of the data profile of the current user to that of
another new user being created virtually on the computer and stored in the
memory(RAM). It is effectively executed such that a user can access to his/her
virtual computer and physical one simultaneously.

Method or Procedure of creating the virtual machine

and connecting them to the physical one
1)Install and run the virtual software in your computer from the internet.
2) Create the virtual machine from the virtual software and install the ISO
Operating System version in the bootable CD form (ie installation media of the
CD) from the internet. If you have the CD version of the Operating System, then
there’s no problem.
3) Partition the space that the virtual machine occupies when running the
Operating System. Then specify your hard disk for your virtual machine.
4) Create the users accounts in the computer management and save it.
5) Ensure that the IPV4 address of this user accounts should be the same when
configuring the network connections (same address range) Change their address
if they are not the same range
6) Ping their address in the command prompt in order to ensure their
connectivity(linkage).

Results
Once the above procedure is well followed, you will obtain the result. The Virtual
computer and the server computer can have their resources being accessed and
shared by the user as an administrator.
Method for Remote Desktop Connection
between the virtual and physical computer
1) Verify that the address are of the same range through the command
prompt.
2) Go to Computer Management to create the user account in the local users
and groups .
3) Disable the firewall of the physical computer.
4) Add the new user account created in the Computer Management taskbar
to the Remote Desktop connection user dialog box as a member found in
groups.
5) Type the name of the user you want to add in Enter the object names to
select and then click OK.
6) The name will be displayed to the list of user in the Remote desktop
connection dialog box
7) Authorize these computers to connect themselves remotely.
8) Verify that the firewall of the computer is disconnected
9) Type the windows + r to activate Windows command and then type mstsc
to activate the Remote Desktop connection on only on Windows computer.
10) Type the IPV4 address on the remote desktop connection of the 2
machines(ie. Physical machine and virtual machine)
11) After successfully connecting to the remote desktop connection,
type the user name and password of the new user profile created on the
computer within it credentials.
12) Confirm the access .

Results
The connection between the virtual and physical computer will finally occur
take place.

Advantages of Virtualization

1) Low heat
Millions of dollars have gone into the research and design of heat dissipation and
control in the data center. But the cold, hard fact is, all of those servers generate
heat. The only way around that? Use fewer servers. How do you manage that?
Virtualization. Virtualize your servers and you're using less physical hardware.
Use less physical hardware and you generate less heat. Generate less heat in
your data center and a host of issues go away.
2) Reduced cost
Hardware is most often the highest cost in the data center. Reduce the amount of
hardware used and you reduce your cost. But the cost goes well beyond that of
hardware — lack of downtime, easier maintenance, less electricity used. Over
time, this all adds up to a significant cost savings.
3) Faster redeployment
When you use a physical server and it dies, the redeploy time depends on a
number of factors: Do you have a backup server ready? Do you have an image of
your server? Is the data on your backup server current? With virtualization, the
redeploy can occur within minutes. Virtual machine Virtual machine snapshots
can be enabled with just a few clicks. redeploying images will be so fast your end
users will hardly notice there was an issue.

4) Backup is easy

Not only can you do full backups of your virtual server, you can do backups and
snapshots of your virtual machines. These virtual machines can be moved from
one server to another and redeployed easier and faster. Snapshots can be taken
throughout the day, ensuring much more up-to-date data. And because firing up
a snapshot is even faster than booting a typical server, downtime is dramatically
cut.

5) Cleaner pastures
Let's face it: If you're not doing your part to help clean up the environment,
you're endangering the future. Reducing your carbon footprint not only helps to
clean up the air we breathe, it also helps to clean up your company image.
Consumers want to see companies reducing their output of pollution and taking
responsibility. Virtualizing your data center will go a long way toward improving
your relationship with the planet and with the consumer.
6) Better testing
What better testing environment is there than a virtual one? If you make a tragic
mistake, all is not lost. Just revert to a previous snapshot and you can move
forward as if the mistake didn't even happen. You can also isolate these testing
environments from end users while still keeping them online. When you've
perfected your work, deploy it as live.
7) Disaster recovery
Virtualization aids in disaster recovery whereby the virtual computer takes the
copied information of your original computer and user accounts being back up.
Such that in case of any disaster taking place, the information meant to be lost
can be retrieved through the virtual PC.

B)Encourage the E-waste recycling for the disposal of

electronic waste and recycling process

This is the separation of raw materials and it waste components of

electronic devices . Recycling is very important because it prevents toxic
elements or substances from entering into the atmosphere, landfills and
environments.
1. PCs/Servers — End of life PCs and servers have to be
demanufactured in-house by the technical staff. Individual
components such as CPUs, RAM and hard drives are harvested and
remarketed whenever possible. The rest of the machine is stripped
down and sorted into different material streams such as plastics,
metals, circuit boards and cables. These are then sent to partners
who refine and smelt these items into raw materials that can be
reused in another capacity.

2. Printers/Copiers/Fax Machines — These low-grade items are stripped

of any potentially toxic materials such as large LCD screens or toner
cartridges and then sent downstream where their plastics and
metals are recycled and reused.

3. UPS & Battery Backups — The majority of Battery Backup systems

use lead acid (wet-cell) batteries. Lead is an extremely toxic
substance, so it’s imperative that it be dealt with properly during e-
waste recycling. This partners does this by smelting and refining the
batteries into recycled commodities such as hard and soft lead and
sodium sulfate (fertilizer). The scrap plastic is then broken down and
used to create new battery cases.

Here are the following steps to take into considerations when you are
about to recycle your computers.

 Save your data from your computer to your hard drive as backup.
Then delete(erase) all the saved and unsaved information including
your personal files present in your computer.
 Disassemble your hardware and other computer components
including keyboard , microprocessor, monitor and mouse to be
removed . Make sure that there’s no disc present in the computer by
ejecting the CD/DVD drive.
