MYP4 Physics – Summative Assessment 2 (2025)

Criteria A & D

Unit title-- Get on the Wave

IB: MYP Concepts KC- Relationship, RC-energy and pattern

Global context Personal and cultural expressions

Statement of inquiry -- New global relationships will become possible as humanity has
learned to communicate through energy transferred as wave motion.

Task Title:“Waves Around Us: Understanding and Reflecting on Their Impact”

G – Goal-To understand New global relationships will become possible as humanity has learned
to communicate through energy transferred as wave motion.

R – Role
You are a science communicator or writer who simplifies complex wave-related concepts for a
high school audience.

A – Audience
Your audience consists of high school students who have basic science knowledge and are
curious to learn more about waves and their role in the modern world.

S – Situation
Wave technologies are everywhere—from internet communication to medical diagnosis—but not
everyone understands how they work or their impacts.
Your article will help others see the scientific principles behind waves and reflect on their benefits
and drawbacks, especially their impact on society and the environment.

P – Product/Performance
You will produce a typed scientific article (800–1200 words) that includes the following sections:

Section What to Include

Title A catchy and creative title to attract attention
(e.g., “The Hidden Power of Waves”)
Introduction Define waves and explain why they are
important in both science and everyday life.
Explains the science of waves (types,
properties, and models)
- Demonstrates real-world applications of
wave technologies

Section 1: The Science of Waves • Types of waves: transverse and longitudinal

• Wave properties: wavelength, frequency,
amplitude, speed
• One wave model (e.g., ripple tank or
pendulum) with explanation
Section 2: Applications of Waves • At least two wave-based technologies (e.g.,
ultrasound in hospitals, optic fibers)
• Explain how they work using wave principles
Section 3: Reflections and Impacts • How wave technologies benefit people or
society
• Any negative effects (e.g., sonar and marine
animals)
• Suggestions to reduce harm or enhance
benefits
Reflects on the positive and negative social
and economic impacts of these technologies
- Suggests future improvements or
alternatives in medical health facilities .

Conclusion Summarize the key ideas and discuss future

possibilities of wave technologies
