Battery Safety
Battery Safety
Risk Assessment: Conduct a specific risk assessment for battery storage and charging
areas.
Training: Ensure all workers are trained in battery safety and emergency procedures.
Signage: Use clear signage to mark storage and charging areas and indicate fire risks.
Lithium-ion batteries: Common in power tools; high energy density but fire/explosion
risk if damaged or overheated.
Lead-acid batteries: Used in vehicles and backup power; corrosive and emit hydrogen
gas during charging.
Designated Charging Stations: Set up specific areas for charging with proper
electrical setups.
Supervision: Avoid leaving batteries to charge unattended, especially overnight.
Charger Compatibility: Use manufacturer-approved chargers only.
Avoid Overcharging: Use timers or smart chargers to prevent overcharging.
Fire Extinguishers: Equip charging stations with appropriate fire extinguishers (e.g.,
Class D or lithium-ion rated).
5. Emergency Response
Fire Plan: Develop and practice a battery fire emergency response plan.
Spill Kits: For lead-acid batteries, keep acid-neutralizing spill kits on hand.
PPE: Workers handling damaged or leaking batteries should wear appropriate
personal protective equipment.
