Traditional Multigrade Lesson Plan

Subject: Science

Grade Levels: Grade 3 and Grade 4

Topic: Living and Non-Living Things

I. OBJECTIVES
Grade 3

- Cognitive: Identify and name examples of living and non-living things from the
environment.

- Affective: Demonstrate curiosity and interest when learning about things around them.

- Psychomotor: Sort pictures or real items into “living” and “non-living” groups through a
hands-on activity.

Grade 4

- Cognitive: Explain the characteristics that make something living or non-living.

- Affective: Show concern and appreciation for the needs of living things.

- Psychomotor: Create a simple poster or chart showing examples of living and non-living
things in their community.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


Topic: Living and Non-Living Things

Materials Needed:

- Visual aids (pictures of animals, plants, rocks, toys, etc.)

- Real objects (leaf, toy, rock, plastic cup)

- Flashcards, video clip (optional)

- Manila paper, tape, scissors, markers

III. PROCEDURE
 A. Preparation

 Lead the class in prayer.


 Greet the students with enthusiasm.
 Check attendance while engaging students in friendly small talk.
 Brief Review: Ask Grade 3: “Do you remember what a plant needs to grow?” Ask
Grade 4: “Can you recall something we studied about animals last week?”

 B. Motivation

 Present a covered Mystery Box with mixed items. Let one student from each grade
pull out one object.
 Ask guiding questions: “Is this object alive?”, “Can it move on its own?”, “What do
you think it needs to survive, if it’s alive?”

 C. Presentation

 Show a chart titled “Living vs. Non-Living Things.”


 Grade 3: Introduce basic concepts using examples and realia.
 Grade 4: Present more in-depth discussion on characteristics like movement,
growth, reproduction, etc.
 Use a short video or slideshow if available.

 D. Group Activity

 Divide the class by grade level.


 Grade 3: Sort picture cards into “Living” and “Non-Living.”
 Grade 4: Create a mini-poster showing living and non-living things in the
community with explanations.

 E. Discussion and Processing

 Each group presents briefly.


 Ask: “What made you place this in the living group?” and address any
misconceptions.

 F. Generalization

 Grade 3: Conclude that living things grow, move, and need food.
 Grade 4: Summarize that living things have unique characteristics unlike non-living
things.

IV. EVALUATION
Grade 3:

- Worksheet: Cut and paste activity – match pictures to “Living” or “Non-Living” categories.

- Oral quiz: Teacher shows a picture and students respond “Living” or “Non-Living.”

Grade 4:

- Write a paragraph explaining how you know if something is living.

- Identify at least three characteristics and give two examples.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Grade 3:

- Draw and label 2 living and 2 non-living things you can see at home. Label and color them.

- Ask: “Which one is your favorite and why?”

Grade 4:

- Interview a family member: “What living things do we take care of at home?”

- Write 3–5 sentences about how your family helps care for living things.
