Antenna Exp-4

The experiment aims to study and plot the radiation pattern of a Yagi-Uda antenna using various equipment. The procedure involves measuring the received signal strength at different angles while rotating the antenna, and the results are summarized in a table showing parameters like main lobe direction and gains. A polar plot is created to visualize the directional pattern, highlighting the antenna's directional characteristics.

EXPERIMENT – 04

Objective:
To study and plot the radiation pattern of the Yagi–Uda antenna.

Equipment’s Used:
APMS, Yagi ANTENNA, Planner dipole as Tx, Antenna Pattern Measurement
System.

Theory:
The Yagi–Uda antenna, commonly called a Yagi antenna, is a directional antenna
composed of:
 One driven element (usually a half-wave dipole)
 One reflector (placed behind the driven element)
 One or more directors (placed in front of the driven element)

This antenna produces a highly directional radiation pattern, with significant gain in
the direction of the directors and low radiation behind the reflector.
The radiation pattern represents the variation of the radiated power with direction.
The 2D radiation pattern can be measured by rotating the antenna and recording the
received signal strength at various angles.

Procedure:
1. Double click on “Control Knob” and set the frequency 2436 MHz.
2. Click on continuous control Knob button until system is set to Polar Plot
Mode.
3. Connect the planner dipole at Tx antenna
4. Adjust the plane of TX antenna in co-plane.
5. Connect the YAGI antenna at RX mount.
6. Connect the cable to system (External Laptop Device.)
7. Rotate the antenna in increments (e.g., every 5° or 10°) up to 360° also rotate
the control knob, recording the received signal at each position.
8. Plot the received signal strength vs. angle on polar or Cartesian graph paper.
9. After completing 360 deg, push the control knob button.
10.The USB mode will invoke and data (angle vs power) will send to Terminal.

Observation Table:

Yadi-Uda Antenna – Radiation Pattern

Results:

Summary Table:
Parameter Value Detail
o
Main Lobe Direction 170 Max Radiation
HPBW 50o From -3 dB
FNBW 210o From First Null
Main Lobe Gain -22dB From Plot
Side Lobe Gain -29dB Approx. from Pattern
Back Lobe Gain -26dB From 0o Region

Using the observation data:

 Created a polar plot to visualize the directional pattern of the Yagi antenna.
 Expect a main lobe in the direction of the directors, and a null or weaker lobe
behind the reflector.
