SECOND PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT (2020 - 2021)


SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS

You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head of this Paper is the time allotted for writing the answers.

This Paper consists of four printed pages.
Attempt all questions from Section A and any four questions from Section B.
All working, including rough work, must be clearly shown and must be done on the same sheet as the
rest of the answer.
Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.
The figure(s), if any, given in this Paper are not to the scale.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].
Calculators are not allowed.
Mathematical tables are provided.

SECTION - A (40 Marks)

Question 1
(a) Solve the quadratic equation given below and write your answer correct to 3 significant figures.
(x – 1)2 – 3x + 4 = 0 [3]

(b) Madhuri deposits ₹800 every month for 2.5 years in a recurring deposit scheme. If the interest
earned is ₹2790, then calculate the rate of interest and the maturity value of the investment. [3]

(c) In the figure given below, AC is the diameter of the circle with centre O. Chord BD is
perpendicular to AC. Write down the angles p, q and r in terms of x. [4]

Question 2

(a) What number should be subtracted from 2x3 – 5x2 + 5x so that (2x – 3) is a factor? [3]

(b) Find the ratio in which the line segment joining A (2, -5) and B (-3, 10) is divided by y – axis.
Also, find the co-ordinates of the point of intersection. [3]

(a) There are 8 cards with the letter A, B, C, D, E, A, E and O written on them. When a card is
randomly picked up from the set, then what is the probability that it is a
(i) vowel? (ii) consonant? (iii) letter E? [3]

(b) Prove the identity: (sin  + cos ) (tan  + cot ) = sec  + cosec  [3]

Question 4

(a) The marked price of an article is ₹4500 and the rate of tax is 12%. A shopkeeper buys it at a
discount and sells it to customer at marked price. If GST deposited by the shopkeeper to the
Government is ₹72, then find the price paid by the shopkeeper for the article inclusive of tax. [3]

(b) Solve the inequation given below.

(c) The following distribution shows the height of 160 pupils of a school.

Draw an ogive for the given distribution. Using the graph, determine the median height and the

Question 5

(a) An A.P. consists of 60 terms. If the first and the last are 6 and 124 respectively, then find the
27th term. [3]

(b) Use a graph paper to answer this question.


(i) Plot the points A (4, 6) and B (1, 2).
(ii) Plot A’ and B’ where, A’ is the image of A when reflected in X – axis and B’ is the image
of B when reflected in the line AA’.
(iii) Give the geometrical name for the figure ABA’B’. [3]

(c) A girl fills a cylindrical bucket 32 cm in height and 18 cm in radius with sand. She empties the
bucket on the ground and makes a conical heap of the sand. If the height of the conical heap is
24 cm, then find its radius and slant height. [4]

Question 6

(a) The line through A (a, 6) and B (9, 5) is parallel to the line through C (4, 1) and D (7, 4).
Find the value of a. [3]

(b) A vertical tower is 20 m high. A man standing at some distance from the tower knows that the
cosine of the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 0.53. How far is he standing from the
foot of the tower? [3]

(c) In the quadrilateral PQRS, PS is parallel to QR, PQ ⊥ QR and PR ⊥ RS. If PQ = 12 cm,


QR = 9 cm, then find PS and RS. Also, calculate the area of PQR : area of SRP. [4]

Question 7

(a) Arc RS subtends 420 angle at the centre O in the figure given below. PR an QS extended meet
at a point T. Find the value of  RQS and  RTQ. [3]

(b) Five years ago, a woman’s age was the square of her son’s age. Ten years hence, her age will be
twice that of her son’s age. Find the woman’s present age. [3]

(a) Calculate the ratio in which the line joining A (−4, 2) and B ( 3, 6) is divided by the point P (x, 3).

(b) Using the Remainder Theorem, factorise 3x3 + 2x2 – 19x + 6 completely. [3]

(c) Find the equation of a line, which has the y – intercept 4 and is parallel to the line 2x – 3y = 7. Find the
co-ordinates of the point, where it cuts the x-axis. [4]

(a) A cylindrical jug of radius 6 cm and height 35 cm is full of orange juice. How many glasses can be
filled if the radius of each glass is 3 cm and height 7 cm? [3]

(b) Calculate the arithmetic mean of the following distribution. [3]

(c) An aeroplane at an altitude of 250 m, observes the angle of depression of two boats on the opposite banks

Question 11

(a) In the figure given below, PQRS is a parallelogram; PQ = 16 cm, QR = 10 cm. L is a point on PR such that
RL : LP = 2 : 3. QL produced meets RS at M and PS produced at N. Prove that  RLQ is similar to  PLN.
Hence find the length of PN. [3]

(b) A wholesaler buys a TV from a manufacture for ₹25000. He marks the price of the TV 20% above the
cost price and sells it to a retailer at a discount of 10% on the marked price. If the rate of GST is 28%,
then find the marked price and the retailer’s cost price inclusive of tax. [3]

(c) Plot A (4, 2), B (3, 0) and C (5, 0). Reflect the point A in the x-axis to get A’. Write the geometrical name
of the figure ABA’C. State the equation of its line of symmetry. Also, name the two points from the
figure which are invariant on reflection in x-axis. [4]
