PTE SPEAKING

Repeat Sentence

Introduction
For this question type, you need to repeat the sentence exactly in the same way as the
speaker speaks. Repeat the sentence clearly and in the same tone as the speaker.

There will be pre-listening time of 3 seconds.


Question prompt length will be from 3 to 9 seconds.
After audio stops you will have 2 seconds and then start speaking.
You will get 15 seconds to answer the question.
On Exam day you can get 10 to 12 questions to answer.

Once the status changes from “Playing” to “Recording”, start


repeating the sentence. There is no short tone.

Please note: You won’t be able to replay the audios, as it will be played only once.

Scoring
Communicative Skill tested: Listening and speaking
Enabling skills tested: Oral fluency, pronunciation, Content (Partial Credit)
Maximum score: Average 13 Credits are allocated for a single question
Content: Each replacement, omission or insertion of a word counts as one error.

Method
Listen first and understand, don’t try to memorize it.
Understand the phrase not the words.
Mean what you say. (to repeat, to inform or to explain)

Do’s
Practice regularly for repeat sentence to get you the tempo and adaptation to the question type.
Watch and listen to the different movies and videos as well as to the podcasts of the variety of
different accents across the world.
Repeat in the same tone as the speaker speaks and stress on the word given by the speaker.
Last but not least: “Fake it until you make it”.
Use correct pronunciation and intonations.

Don’ts
Don’t hesitate or restart the sentence if you have made a mistake. Continue with the next word
without correcting yourself.
Don’t add the extra words or letters apart from the original recording, it will reduce your marks in
the content.
Try to eliminate the ‘Umming and Urring’ while speaking.
Don’t keep silent for more than 3 seconds, or else the recorder will stop.
Don’t shout into the mic, as the headphones are ultra-sensitive, and can capture minute sound
as well.
