Variation 3

The document is a mathematics worksheet for Form 4 students focusing on partial variation equations. It includes various problems requiring students to express relationships between variables, find equations, and solve for unknowns based on given conditions. The worksheet covers topics such as direct and inverse variation, providing practical examples related to shipping fees, taxi fares, and fruit prices.

9.4 部分變(Partial Variation)

1. Write an equation to represent each of the following statements.

Statement Equation
A is partly constant and partly varies directly
(a)
as the square of x.
P is partly constant and partly varies inversely
(b)
as q.
One part of S is a constant and the other part
(c)
varies directly as t .
One part of Z is varies directly as a, one part
(d) varies directly as b2 and other part varies
directly as the cube root of c.
z partly varies directly as x2 and partly varies
(e)
inversely as y.

T partly varies inversely as p and partly varies

(f)
inversely as q3.

2. Suppose one part of b is a constant and the other part varies directly as a.
When a = 2, b = 19 and when a = 5, b = 40. Find an equation connecting a and b.

𝑏 = 5 + 7𝑎

3. The shipping fee $P of delivery services is partly constant and partly varies directly as the
weight (w kg) of the goods. The shipping fee is $46.8 when the weight of goods is 4 kg. The
shipping fee is $61.2 when the weight of goods is 6 kg.

(a) Express P in terms of w.

(b) Find the weight of goods if the shipping fee is $75.6.

(a) 𝑃 = 18 + 7.2𝑤

(b) 8 kg

4. Taxi fare is partly constant for the first 2 km of route and partly varies directly as the
remaining route (d km). If the route is 4 km, taxi fare is $38. If the route is 4.6 km, taxi fare
is $42.8. Express the taxi fare is terms of d.

6. The price ($P) of a kind of fruit is partly constant and partly varies inversely as the weight
(w kg) of the fruit harvested. It is known that the price of the fruit is $9 when 400 kg of the
fruit is harvested. The price of the fruit is $18 when 100 kg of the fruit is harvested.
