CE 97: FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT

Project Presentation and Report Guidelines

Objectives:
1. Apply fundamental principles of foundation engineering in assessing the adequacy of an existing
foundation design or in developing an appropriate foundation system for a given structure.
2. Enhance the students’ ability to interpret geotechnical data, perform engineering analysis, and
propose technically sound and practical solutions based on site conditions, structural
requirements, and design standards.

I. Presentation Guidelines

General Instructions:
1. Each group is required to prepare a pre-recorded video presentation.
2. The video must be between 15 to 20 minutes in length.
3. A 10-15minute Q&A session may follow during the scheduled presentation.
4. Videos exceeding the maximum time may receive a point deduction.
5. Use clear and well-organized slides with diagrams, graphs, and photos.

Content of the Presentation:

1. General Title Slide

2. Introduction and Objectives
3. Project Background
4. Site and Soil Conditions
5. Assessment/Design Methodology
6. Analysis and Interpretation
7. Observations and Findings
8. Recommendations
9. Conclusion
Slide Content:
1. General Title
Content: Include the project title, your name, your group's name (if applicable), the date, and any
relevant logos (university, department, etc.).
Design: Use a professional and clean layout with a readable font size and color scheme that
aligns with the institution's branding.
2. Introduction and Objectives
Content: Brief overview of the structure/facility assessed, clearly state the main objective of your
project, importance of foundation assessments in civil engineering, and limitations of the
assessment
Presentation Tips: Keep it concise and impactful.
3. Project Background
Content: Familiarize the audience with the design and foundation details, location and type of
structure, type of foundation system used, design loading conditions, construction year and any
notable construction issues or events and history of foundation performance (if available).

4. Site and Soil Conditions

Content: Summary of the original soil report, groundwater conditions, notable geological or
environmental concerns, any evidence of subsurface changes.
5. Assessment Methodology
Content: Present how the assessment was performed, methods used, standards followed, tools
and equipment used, timeline of the assessment process, data collection strategy.
6. Analysis and Interpretation
Content: Evaluate the foundation’s performance based on engineering principles. Evaluation of
bearing capacity and safety margins, structural integrity of the foundation, compliance with design
codes and standards, long-term performance trends (if monitoring data is available)
7. Observations and Findings
Content: Report what was discovered during the assessment. Foundation condition: any damage,
wear, signs of distress, superstructure behavior, settlement monitoring results, comparison with
design limits, data visualizations.
8. Conclusions
Content: Summary of key design outcomes, justification of design choices,
9. Recommendations
For assessment: Repairs, retrofitting recommendations
For design: Construction considerations, suggested alternatives, or further studies
