Network & Communications (INFS301) Assignment Spring 2025

Group Assignment

Enterprise Network Design & Analysis

1. Assignment Overview

In this assignment, each group (3 members) will design an enterprise network that connects several
LANs across multiple departments and includes a wireless segment. The assignment will assess
the ability to design a network that serves a variety of end devices (servers, desktops, laptops,
printers, etc.), deploy effective WLAN solutions, perform subnetting and IP addressing, implement
routing protocols, and, optionally, manage differentiated traffic types using QoS. Students are
expected to incorporate both conceptual understanding and practical skills, applying theories from
the course to a realistic enterprise scenario.

2. Scenario Description

The enterprise under consideration consists of multiple departments (e.g., Administration,

Finance, HR, and IT) spread across different buildings on a corporate campus. Each department
has its own LAN that must be interconnected with others. Additionally, a segment of the network
will operate as a WLAN to support mobile devices, meeting rooms, and public areas. The network
must be robust, secure, and scalable.

Key scenario challenges include:

• Enterprise Network Design: Creating a network that accommodates diverse devices

(servers, desktops, laptops, printers) with clear separation and interconnectivity.
• WLAN Planning: Designing the WLAN by selecting optimal access point (AP)
locations to ensure maximum coverage with minimal interference.
• Subnetting & IP Addressing: Allocating IP addresses from a given address space to
meet specific minimum requirements for each network segment.
• Routing: Implementing routing mechanisms so that routers can automatically discover
and connect remote subnets.
• (Extra) Traffic Management & QoS: Developing a scenario where different types of
traffic (e.g., VoIP, video conferencing, data transfer) are prioritized and managed through
QoS policies in the simulated environment.

3. Assignment Objectives

By the end of the assignment, students will be able to:

• Design a multi-LAN enterprise network incorporating both wired and wireless segments.
• Plan and implement WLAN deployment by analyzing physical space and interference
considerations.
• Perform subnetting and assign IP addresses based on given network requirements.

Network & Communications (INFS301) Assignment Spring 2025

• Configure routing protocols to facilitate inter-LAN communication and remote network

discovery.
• Apply QoS techniques to ensure that critical applications receive appropriate network
resources.
• Document the design process, implementation steps, and performance outcomes in a
detailed technical report.

4. Assignment Tasks
Task 1: Enterprise Scenario Analysis & Requirements Gathering (15%)

• Description:
Analyze the enterprise context to define requirements. Determine the number of LANs,
types of devices (servers, desktops, laptops, printers), and critical applications.
• Deliverables:
A brief scenario description outlining the departments, user types, and key service needs.
• Timeline: Week 1.
Task 2: Network Design & Topology Development (25%)

• Description:
o Enterprise LAN Design: Create both logical and physical network diagrams.
o WLAN Planning: Identify and justify AP placement to maximize coverage while
reducing interference.
o IP Addressing: Perform subnetting on the provided address space to allocate
sufficient networks and hosts for each department.
• Deliverables:
Detailed network diagrams, a subnetting plan, and justification for AP locations.
• Timeline: Weeks 2–3

Task 3: Routing & Configuration (20%)

• Description:
o Configure routing protocols on the routers to ensure that all LANs can discover and
communicate with remote networks.
o Detail the routing mechanism used (e.g., OSPF, EIGRP) and explain the selection.
• Deliverables:
Configuration files (or CLI command outputs) and a written explanation of the routing
design.
• Timeline: Weeks 4–5.

screenshots or simulation logs that justify the AP placement decisions.
• Timeline: Weeks 5–6.

Task 5: (Extra) QoS Management & Traffic Prioritization (Optional, Bonus 10%)

• Description:
o Develop a scenario with diverse traffic types (VoIP, video, and data) and apply QoS
policies to prioritize critical applications.
