Text 1
The History of Air Travel

[1] In 1783 two Frenchmen, the Montgolfier Brothers, invented the hot-air balloon. They filled a large
balloon with hot air, which was generated by burning wool below the balloon. The balloon rose from
the ground because hot air is lighter than cold air. It flew at a height of three thousand feet and
traveled over five miles across Paris in twenty-five minutes.

[2] The Robert Brothers, also Frenchmen, developed the hydrogen balloon later in 1783. Since hydrogen
is fourteen times lighter than air, a balloon filled with this gas would rise better than one filled with
hot air. It traveled across the English Channel in 1785 and all the Europeans were surprised by the
event. However, the hydrogen balloon was not reliable because it depended so much on weather
conditions.

[3] The Wright Brothers flew the first man-carrying aeroplane in 1903. It was chiefly made of wood and
was light in weight. They carried out a lot of experiments before they started the flight. Their success
did not come easily. They had failed many times owing to poor engine design or bad weather. Their
achievement paved the way for the development of the present aircraft history.

[4] The French designed a steam-powered air-ship in the 1930s. It was built on the principle of the hot-
air balloon. It could accommodate not more than 15 passengers at one time. It quickly became a
popular form of transport at that time, especially in Germany and France. However, it was not
entirely safe and fatal accidents did happen. Its popularity decreased as a result.

[5] The development of aircraft was speeded up by two World Wars. The United States of America,
Germany and Britain produced better plans for long-distance flights. They put a lot of effort in their
design so as to win in the wars. Since then, bigger and better planes have been manufactured.
