Dear Julia,
Last week, our school held the annual sports day. It was full of fun and
excitement. We decorated the whole school and the playground with
colourful flags and flowers. On that day, the weather was warm and sunny.
The students were in many teams. We wore T-shirts in our team colours. At 9
a.m., our principal announced the day open. There were a lot of outdoor
activities, such as races, jumps, basketball and football games. I took part in
the 100-metre race and won the silver cup. The team from my class won the
relay race. My friend, Katrina, won the first position in the long jump. But my
other friend, Noah, fell and his leg was injured during the basketball match.
The football matches were the most thrilling activities. In the middle of one
match, it started raining, but luckily, the rain didn’t last long. Our teachers
and parents sat along the playground to cheer for us. There were also some
food stalls with delicious dishes such as hot dogs, ice cream and sausages.
At 5 p.m., our principal gave the closing speech. He congratulated all the
students for having a successful day. Then he gave medals and cups to the
winners. It was a wonderful day and I totally enjoyed all the activities.
Take care and write to me soon.

Sumo wrestling is a national sport of Japan. It is a very old sport. It probably

fifteen after the applicants pass a health check. Sumo wrestlers are very big
men. They usually weigh between 120 and 150 kilos. Sumo wrestlers don’t
eat breakfast, so they are very hungry and eat a lot at lunchtime. They
usually eat chankonable, a traditional dish with chicken, fish, beef, tofu and a

It’s important for sumo wrestlers to be quick, active and flexible. When the
match begins, wrestlers lock hands and arms and try to tip each other over
or push their opponent out of the thick rope border. One match rarely lasts

My name is Sylvia and my favourite gadget is my e-book reader, Kindle. I got
it on my last birthday. It’s smaller and lighter than a tablet. The battery even
lasts longer. In fact, it can run for weeks on a single charge. Besides, it hasn’t
got an LCD colour display like a tablet or smartphone, so it doesn’t cause eye
strain even when you read for long hours. I love my Kindle because I always
have lots of books to read on the bus. I can store up to 1,500 books on it, but
I only have forty-five. I’m never bored with my Kindle. Last Christmas, my

grandparents gave my brother and me a hoverboard. It’s like an electronic
skateboard, which is really cool. At first, it was difficult for me to keep my
balance on the hoverboard. My brother rode it better than me. We use it to
travel around the neighbourhood and in the park. Hoverboards work better
on flat and straight surfaces than on gravel, grass or dirt. You have to wear a
helmet when riding a hoverboard to avoid injuries. And it’s not a good idea to

Nowadays, teenagers use digital technologies for everyday activities like
keeping in touch with friends on social media, relaxing and doing schoolwork.
There are some tips that they need to know to avoid online risks. Firstly,
keep your personal information private. Never tell a stranger where you live
or your phone number. If you’re not sure whether you should share
something or not, ask a parent. You should also think carefully before you
post. As soon as a message or a photo is put online, someone can take a
screenshot of it and it can be online forever. Secondly, be choosy about your
online friends. It’s not safe to meet an online friend in person. Keep in mind
that online friends are not the same as real in-person friends. Some people
might say they’re in seventh grade online but actually are adults. Moreover,
don’t be mean or embarrass other people online. Tell an adult right away if
someone says something to you that makes you uncomfortable. Also, tell an
adult if you see anyone bullying or saying unkind stuff to other children.

learned how to use a large touch-screen to communicate with a human.
Kanzi lives with other bonobos at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa,
USA. He ‘talks’ to his trainer, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, using a screen with
400 lexigrams – simple images that represent words.
13. __________
Scientist Jennifer Vonk also uses touch-screens with the animals she studies.
A few years ago, she did an experiment with three young black bears:
Brutus, Dusty and Bella. At the time, people thought that only animals who
lived in groups could count. Vonk experimented with bears because they
usually live alone. Using extra strong touch-screen tablets, she found that
the bears could count just like animals in groups – the group isn’t important
in learning how to count.
14. __________
But animals don’t only use touch-screens in experiments. The penguins at a
zoo near Los Angeles have a tablet that they use for entertainment. Two
young male penguins, Jeremy and Newsome, particularly like an app called
Game for Cats. In the game they have to ‘catch’ a mouse on the screen. The
game exercises their minds and helps to make their lives in the zoo more
interesting.

26. You shouldn’t share your personal information with strangers.
27. It’s easy to remove a post or a photo after you put it online.
