The study investigates how varying water content affects the properties of oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid. Results indicate that increased water content leads to a decrease in thickness and density, altering the state of matter from solid to liquid depending on applied force. The research concludes that understanding these effects can inform future applications and experiments involving non-Newtonian fluids.

A study on the effect of water content on the oobleck’s ability to change its state of

matter.

1. Introduction

Non-newtonian fluids are an interesting substance that can have a solid and a liquid

state of matter. Knowing how this substance works is very important because it can be

used in various fields such as engineering, medicine, etc. Knowing this, we want to

determine how the water content can affect the oobleck’s ability to change its state of

matter.

Objectives

● Review the steps of methods of science;

● Describe the different processes or steps in methods of science using scenarios

● Formulate a hypothesis (null, alternative, cause and effect) based on the

problem; and,

● Accept carefully and objectively the verified facts

2. Problem Statement

The primary objective of this experiment is to determine the effect of the water

content on the oobleck’s ability to change its state of matter.

3. Hypothesis

If the water content is higher, then the oobleck will change its state of matter.

4. Methodology

Substance/Chemicals Glassware/Equipment

Two (2) cups of tap water One (1) mixing bowl

Two and a half (2.5) cups of cornstarch One (1) spoon
One (1) measuring cup
Fork

Procedure:

One (1) mixing bowl and two and a half(2.5) cups of cornstarch were prepared. After

the preparations, the physical properties of the initial materials were noted. First, two

cups of cornstarch were poured inside a beaker. Secondly, one minute was spent mixing

the cornstarch bare handed to get a sense of its texture. Then, 1 cup of water was added

and was mixed slowly while pouring. Next, a for was used to get any chunks out. Lastly,

One fourth (1.25) cups of water was poured at a time. Observations were noted down

and kept in a book.

6. Data Analysis

(GQ1) The more water that had been added, the less oobleck there was. With force

acted onto the oobleck, it was solid but without force, it was liquid.

(GQ2) The amount of water and cornstarch added affect the physical properties,

consistency and state of matter as the more water there was, the less thick and dense it

became. Before adding more than one and one fourths(1 ¼ ) cups of water, the state of

matter was either solid or liquid, depending on how much force you put on the mixture.

The consistency also became more and more diluted as the experiment went on.

(GQ3) One possible control group for this experiment is an oobleck mixture with one(1)

cup of water and two and a half(2.5) cups of cornstarch. This would be the control
group as as we add more water to the mixture, it becomes more diluted and we would

see the differences between one(1) cup of water to two(2) cups.

(GQ4)

During this experiment, I was able to follow three safety precautions. First of all, I was

wearing goggles and an apron so the mixture wouldn't be able to get into my eyes or my

clothes. Secondly, my yaya was there just in case I made a mistake and did something

that could hurt myself or could possibly be very messy. Lastly, I made sure to be focused

on the experiment and not get distracted by anything else.

Reflection: (GQ5) I can relate our changing environment to the oobleck changing its

properties because our environment is constantly changing and when we add things to

our environment, it can change drastically. It is important to adapt to change since it's

important in both science and life. Just like data analysis, we need to analyze the things

that happen in our life and the changes that have happened so we can adapt to it and

learn from it.

7. Conclusion and Recommendations

In conclusion, our research has shown that the different water content levels have an

effect on the oobleck’s ability to change its state of matter and consistency.
Building on this research, we recommend that people use this knowledge for future

studies/applications or use this knowledge to recreate this experiment for more

information on how the experiment worked and have more accurate results. Lastly, I

would recommend taking more pictures as the experiment goes on, as this could be very

important in the report.
