Invasive Species

The document discusses invasive species, defining them as non-native plants or animals that disrupt local ecosystems. It outlines their characteristics, causes of introduction, and the negative effects they have on native species and environments. Additionally, it provides solutions for mitigating their impact and highlights the role of climate change in exacerbating the spread of these species.

INTRODUCTION
Many of the plants and animals that
surround us have been transported from
their natural habitat to other places.
Some species coexist with native species
in a balanced way, but there are some
that develop very quickly and escape
HABITAT:
the natural home
human control, becoming harmful. We call of an animal, plant,
these species invasive species. or organism
Invasive Species
What are invasive species?
Invasive species are animal or plants
from another region of the world that
don‘t belong in their new environment.

Espatódea (Spathodea campalunata), from Africa

Invasive Species
In Portugal

This flower is very commun in Portugal.

Oxalis pes-caprae

Cygnus atratus. (Leptinotarsa decemlineata)
Causes
of Invasive Species:
Some species may reach new areas through
natural migration, but they are mostly
introduced by the activities of other
species (humans in general). For example,
when we are in a plane and this plane
transports species into other countries.
What are the main characteristics
of an invasive plant?
In the places where they They produce a high number of
settle, they are not affected seeds, which can be viable for long
by their natural enemies, which periods of time or stimulated by
contribute to maintaining their fire, which is particularly serious in
population balance in their Mediterranean regions;
regions of origin;

They grow faster or have a

greater dispersal capacity
than native species;
Effects
of Invasive Species:

Invasive plant species can impact soil quality, which in

turns accentuates erosion, which in turn can negatively
impact our water quality. They threaten native trees
and plants which store carbon and provide shade and
habitat for animals and other plants.
Invasive Control Methods
1. Check the plants you are buying for your garden are not invasive

If possible, replace invasive plants in your garden with non-

invasive alternatives.
For example: Although pretty, the Lantana plant forms dense,
impenetrable thickets that take over native bushland and
pastures on the east coast of Australia. It impacts 95
threatened plants species in Australia.
Invasive Control Methods
2. Clean your clothes, boots and gear

Do this after every walk to get rid of hitchhiking

weed seeds and pathogens. Remove seeds from
shoes and clothing, and check your gear to
ensure seeds are not hidden in pockets or velcro
straps.
Invasive Control Methods
3. Don't "pack a pest" when traveling

Fruits and vegetables, plants, insects and animals can

carry pests or become invasive themselves. When
travelling interstate, be extra cautious about who you
might be travelling with.
Don't move firewood. They can harbour pests. Even healthy
wood from healthy trees can attract invasive species if the
wood is kept outdoors.
Invasive Control Methods
4. Do not release aquarium fish and plants into the wild

This includes live bait or other exotic animals.

It's not just big fish that can cause damage. Small
ornamental fish species popular in aquariums can be an
equally large threat to native fish species.
Climate change accelerates the spread of
invasive species NEW’S
Climate change allows invasive plants to move into new
areas where they were previously limited by harsh
conditions
The increase in global temperatures caused
by climate change is triggering a series of
effects on nature. One of these worrying
impacts is the predicted growth of up to
36% in the number of exotic species on all
continents by 2050.
Climate change accelerates the spread of
invasive species NEW’S
These exotic species, which include both
plants and animals that live outside their
natural ranges, can become invasive, causing
significant damage to the ecosystems and
areas they colonize. This negatively affects
the global food supply, water quality,
biodiversity and even human livelihoods.
Question Break!

Several different
types of species are
present in our
ecosystem.
What happens if one of these
species moves to another
habitat? What happens to the
species that live there?
Conclusion
Despite being a science project, we find
this type of information very important not
only for knowledge but also to stay
informed about this type of living beings
that put local species at risk.
