EMC Isilon storage OneFS® is EMC Isilon's seventh-generation operating system that provides
system the intelligence behind all Isilon® scale-out storage systems. It combines
the three layers of traditional storage architectures—file system, volume
manager and RAID—into one unified software layer, creating a single
intelligent file system that spans all nodes within a cluster.
OneFS enables:
Lab environment The environment for this lab includes the following:
4 x EMC Isilon virtual storage nodes
1 x Windows 7 Client
o Username: vlab\user1
o Password: Password123
1 x Windows 2008 R2 Server
o Username: Administrator
o Password: Password123
1 x Linux client
o Username: root

Overview In this lab you will connect to the serial ports of physical nodes that are
currently unconfigured. This is the state it would be in if it was ordered and
shipped onsite. You will configure the 1st node in the cluster by stepping
through configuration wizard. Then you will add 2 more nodes to finish the
configuration of the EMC Isilon storage system to the minimum of 3 nodes
for the cluster..
Click the Windows Icon and select the Isilon Consoles.bat icon
Click on any of the PuTTY windows. If you do not see any text, press the
Enter key. You will be given a 4 choices.
Select “Create a new cluster” by typing 1, and pressing the Enter key.
(Note: if you incorrectly enter anything you can always type back and
Enter to step back a step in the wizard)
At the prompt “Please enter new password for root:”, type “a” (without
quotes), and press Enter
At the prompt “Please enter new password for admin”, type “a” (without
quotes), and press Enter
Would you like to enable SupportIQ? [yes] type no and press Enter
Type in any name that makes sense and press Enter. The customer's name
or division is usually good.
For most demos, simply press Enter to choose the default of UTF-8. Others
can be used, if needed.
Use the following values for the Low and High Addresses:
Having a range of 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.254 means that no matter how large the
cluster gets, no configuration changes will be needed to the backend
network
When prompted to set "Search domains", type vlab.local and press Enter
When prompted to set "Configure cluster time zone", type 2 and press
Enter
Most installs use Manual, if Secure is selected, then nodes can only be
joined from the cluster, not from the unconfigured node.
At this point the terminal will disconnect because of the way it is virtualized.
It usually takes about two minutes for the cluster to commit this
configuration, however, with virtualization, this can be faster. Now is a
good time to answer any questions from the customer.
Add the 3rd node to the cluster via the web administration interfaces
Choose any of the web browsers installed. They all default to loading the
Administration Web Interface. Agreed to any SSL certificate warnings that
appear because the cluster is using a self-signed certificate.
You can ignore any alerts, as they are caused by OneFS being run as a
virtual machine.
The Virtual Hot Spare (VHS) will also be displayed as being large part of the
pie chart on the right because of this virtualization.
Click the "Add node" on one of the nodes to join it to the cluster
Once all three nodes are online and have an IP address, you can end this
lab.
