Course Objectives:
The course aims to introduce students to engineering materials, their Properties &
production techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
 Understand the structure of metals, organic polymers, and ceramics;
 Describe the properties (strength, compression, and corrosion) characterizing metals, ceramics,
and organic polymers;
 Reflect on choice of materials for certain applications/final products;
 Describe the most common testing methods for materials

 Introduction, Metals (Ferrous metals, Non-Ferrous), Polymers,
Composites, Ceramics
 Selection of materials
 Structure of atoms and molecules, bonding in solids, types of bonds and
comparison of bonds
 Structure and imperfections in crystals, crystal structure, crystal geometry,
structure of crystalline solids
 Methods of determining crystal structures, imperfections in crystals
 Types of imperfection, point imperfection
2. Processing/ solidification of metals and structure development
3. Defect in crystals and implications: point defects, dislocations, and
dislocation theory
4. Deformation in solids and implications:
introduction, slip, twinning,
Mechanical properties: strength, compression,
phase & phase transformation,
metallic alloy systems, Iron-carbon equilibrium diagram,
Types of metal alloys,
deformations-concept of stress and strain, elastic and plastic deformation
in materials, stress-strain curves, dislocations in metals

 Ductile and brittle, fatigue- S-N curve, crack initiation and propagation,
