Let Us Study
 Vocal Music of the Romantic Period Vocal music is one of the best tools for expressing one’s feelings. This form of
expression became more evident during the Romantic period. Romanticism coincided with the Industrial Revolution
in Western Europe that brought about the rise of socialism and capitalism.
 The Romantic Period’s basic quality is emotional subjectivity.
 Composers explore feelings of grandiosity, intimacy, unpredictability, sad, rapture and longing. Romantic vocal
forms like the art song and operas were about fantasy, supernatural, romance and the nature as mirror of the
human heart.
 To fully understand and appreciate vocal music of the Romantic Period, this unit will let you experience the cultural
developments and artistic forms of expression of the period.
 OPERA COMPOSER OF THE ROMANTIC COMPOSER Full Name Franz Peter Schubert
 Birth date January 31, 1797
 Death date November 19, 1828
 Place of Birth Himmelpfortgrund, near Vienna
 Schubert’s ‘Erlkönig’ Erlkönig, also called Erl-King or Elf-King, song setting by Franz Schubert, written in 1815 and
based on a 1782 poem of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. “Erlkönig” is considered by many to be
one of the greatest ballads ever penned. The song was written for two performers, a singer and a pianist, and it
packs a remarkable amount of tension and drama into a mere four minutes. Its effectiveness is doubly impressive
because Schubert was only 18 years old when he composed it.

V.REMARKS
VI.REFLECTIONS
Let Us Reflect
You have learned about the life and works of Francis Peter Schubert and his famous composition “Erlkönig”.
Schubert’s compositional style progressed rapidly throughout his short life. A feeling of regret for the loss of
potential masterpieces caused by his early death at age 31 was expressed in the epitaph on his large tombstone
written by his friend the poet Franz Grillparzer: “Here music has buried a treasure, but even fairer hopes.” Some
have disagreed with this early view, arguing that Schubert in his lifetime did produce enough masterpieces not to
be limited to the image of an unfulfilled promise.
A.Did the remedial lesson work?
