compound words. In collection the data, the researcher used documentation
technique and the steps are reading the novel, underlining the words, selecting
and collecting the data systematically in accordance with the types of
compound words, analyzing the data based on Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy
theory.
The results showed that there are 80 compound words. Based on the types of
compound words, there are 49 words categorized as compound nouns,
9 words categorized as compound verbs, 21 words categorized as compound
adjectives, and 1 words categorized as compound prepositions. It can be
indicated that the dominant types of compound words in the The Little Prince
novel is compound noun.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Title Affirmation
As the first to understanding the title of this thesis, and to avoid the
need, then the author feels the need to explain some words that became the tittle
of this thesis. As for the title of the thesis which ―An Analysis of Compound
Words in The ―The Little Prince Novel‖. As for the explanation of the meaning
some of the terms contained in the title of this proposal are follows:
An analysis is an explanation or description or description that results
from considering something carefully. Meanwhile, what is meant by the title in
this title is to understand the types and meanings of compound words in the
novel. Activities in this data analysis include sorting the data classifying the
data according to the theories used in this investigation, and exposing the data
found in this ivestigation in detail. Analysis for a detailed understanding of the
types of compound words in the novel.
Morphology or word form is a branch of linguistics that identifies the
basic units o language as grammatical units. Morphology studies the intricacies
of word forms and the effect of changes in word form on the group and
meaning of words. Word formation is the formation of words in several ways.
Such as combining, summarizing, borrowing words from other languages to
produce new word forms. There are several processes of word formation in
English, such as conversation, borrowing, blending, clipping, back formation,
compounding and so on.
Compounding is the most productive type of word-formation process
in English. Historically, it has a long tradition in English: two-thirds of the
words in the old english poe beowulf, for intance, are compounds.
Compounding involves combining two base morphemes to create a word with a
new meaning that is not necessarily a sum of the meanings of the individual
2

words. For instance, hot and house have individual meanings, and a house is
certainly a building kept at a high temperature. But is not simply any kind of
overheated building but one in which plants requiring very high temperatures
are gown.
The compound words is a word that formed to combine the roots and
the smaller category of the phrasal words, is items that have the internal
structure of phrases but the function of syntactical is as words. In many cases,
compounds are easy to tell apart from phrases with two content words. For
instance, compounds may consist of two or more lexeme stems that are
juxtaposed in a single word-form, and, when a language does not allow phrases
consisting of two juxtaposed lexemes of those same word-classes, the
combination must be a compound.
Novel is a medium for expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas of the
author in the life around them. When new problems arise in the life around, the
conscience of the novelist will be called to quickly create a story. As a form of
literature middle (not short story or romance) novel is ideal for lifting important
events in human life in a condition decisive critical. Variety comes with variety
problem that demands a solution.
From the explanation above, it can be concluded that this research is to
analysis what is types and meaning of the Compound Words in The Little
Prince Novel. Thus, the researcher is interesed to conduct ―An Analysis of
Compound Words in The The Little Prince Novel‖

B. Background of the Problem

Morphology is the study of the internal structures of word, how it is
formed by the smaller pieces, and concerned with the study of how words is
formed in language. According to Booij morphology is a subdicipline of
linguistics that deals with such patterns.2 Therefore, morphology deals with the

internal constituent structure of words as well.

The two basic functions of morphological operations are the creation of
new words. Morphology serves to expand the lexicon, the set of establish
words of a language, but is not the only source of lexical units, and not even
that of all complex words, which also arise through borrowing, and word
creation. Morphological rules have two functions: morphology is a branch of
linguistic that studies about words. It means that in morphology, people would
analyze words and how the words are for made. From the meaning of
morphology above that can be concluded, a word that get new word with new
meaning is morphology. Bickkord stated that Morphology is ofter divided into
two major categories, namely morphology derivation and morphology of
imflextion take one word and change it become another word namely create
new lexical . On the other side the morphology of implection does not change
one word into other word and never change the sinthectic category.the
morphology of derived derivation another form of the same word. 3
Meanwhile, the term word is a part of everyone‘s vocabulary. Word is
the most basic unit of a language. 4 A word itself has a meaning , but word can
be grammatically simple and complex word. Complex word is word that has
internal structure that can be divided into smaller part, while the simple word is
the smallest word only consisting of one single morpheme that has one single
meaning. A new word can be formed naturally because of the habits, changing
times abd environments. The process of combining the elements the elements
to make a new word is ussually term as word formation process. word

process.5 This research discusses about compounding as a part of word

formation process.
Word formation is the process whereby new words come into being in
alanguage. Compounding is one of the word formation processes.
Compounding is a joining of two separate words toproduce a single form.
Compound word a combination of two or more separatewords to form a new
word with a new meaning. They can function as differentpart of speech, which
can dictate what form the compound takes on. Compound words are one type
of formation or the formation of words or so- called words formation in
addition to clipping, blending, borrowing, blending, conversion, reduplication,
abbreviation which is a type of word formation that other. The author in his
research focuses on the study of compounding, the following The discussion:
Words in English, especially the adjectiveand noun, can combined in
composite construction (compound structures) with various Kind of way. When
combined these words are formed, they have New meaning. One sure way to
determine which compound words By using a good English dictionary to
search for and Learn the combined word.O'Grady and Guzman (1996)
explain that one type of process morphology in a language called
compounding. It is defined as a combination of some lexical categories such as
adjective, noun, verb, or prepostionwith the aim of building a larger unit than
words. The same opinion was expressed by Allen (1986), the compounds are
leksem constructed from two or more free morpheme,
Compounding is the most productive type of word formation process in
English, it is perhaps also the most controversial one in terms of its linguistic
analysis.6 Compounding is the process of bringing together two or more words
into a single entity that has one meaning of the word. . According to McCarthy,
compound is word formed by combining roots and the much smaller category

of phrasal words, that is items that have the internal structure of phrases but
function syntactically as word. The part of compound can be free morpheme
derived words, or other compound.7 Compounding is devided into compound
nouns, compound adjective, compound verb and compound adverb.
Furthermore, English orthography is not consistent in explaining compounds
since they are sometimes written as single words, sometimes with an
intervening hyphen, and sometimes as separate words. On the other hand, Booij
agues that compounds are combination of two or more lexeme. It can conclude
that compound word is a new word that formed from two or more morphemes.
A morpheme is the smallest unit of language that carriage information about
meaning or function.
Compound words can also be found in everyday language forms such
as newspaper, magazine, tabloid, novel, and film on it is also similar in about
content, ther are about politics, social, economy sport, entertaiment.
Novel is a part of the litarature. It is the representation of human
condition against the effort to reach the purpose of living. The novel expresses
some aspects of human‘s love, life and exustance because it tells about human
activities and describes what happened in surrounding. Novel is generally
thought of as containing about novella. In other words, the novel tells story and
contains some important elements.8 This can be considered as someting
important because is describes real life, experienes, people thoughts, and
feelings about life. A novel can be avoke our feelings and emotions because
what is in the novel is a depiction real human experience. This is why the word
most often used to describe the realistic. Novel as a literary work has known
since eightenth century in england, with the result as like novel, poem, poetry
drama and prose. A novel is self- contained piece of fictional prose longer than

40.000 words.9 A novel is defined as stories consist of more than one events.
Novel also contain with characters, setting and so on.
Novel is self contained; it provides within its own compass everything
that the writer deemed necessary for the comprehension and enjoy meant of his
work.48 Further according to Lukacs, the novel is the epic of an age in which
the extensive totality of life is no longer directly given, in which the
immanence of meaning in life has become a problem, yet which still thinks in
terms of totality. 49 It would be superficial—a matter of a mere artistic
technicality—to look for the only and decisive genre-defining criterion in the
question of whether a work is written in verse or prose.
Some previous studies are also focusing on compound words on novel.
Nurahmi Yati research entitled A Morphological Study On English Compound
words Found In English Textbook Of When English Rings A Bell Subject at
7th. This research is focused on compound words that are found in English
textbook of when rings a bell‘s subject at 7th grade at junior high school. This
Research aimed to describe what the forms of compound words are and
what themeanings of compound word are in English textbook of when rings a
bell‘s subject at 7th grade at junior high school. This research is descriptive
qualitative research. The object of this study is compound words. The
technique of collecting data is documentation method. The results of this
study indicate that compound noun is more dominant than compound verb,
also adjective, and The meaning of compound word Endoxentric is more
dominant compared exocentric meaning. The difference between this research
and the researcher‘s research is this research uses English Textbook Of When
English Rings A Bell Subject at 7th to analyze compound words, while the
research researchers used novel The Little Prince to analyze.

this research is to analyze the prosess of compound word formation and
determine the types of compound words that exist in the novel, this novel tells
the life of several kingdoms on a fictional continen. The results of this study
indicate that compound noun is more dominant than compound verb and also
compound adjective. The difference between this study and the research lies in
the object of the research, previous studies only examined the types of
compound words, while this study examines in full the types of compound
words of compound words in the novel.
Nepi Upiah research entitled an analysis of Compound Words In Three
Articles of The Jakarta Post. The purpose of this research are to find out the
types and the meanings of compound words. Then to know the types of
compound words mostly found in articles. The instrumen of this study is
documents (three selected article of the jakarta post publish on may 4th-6th,
2018 in online edition). Method of this study used descriptive qualitative
research. The result of this study that there are 71 compound words and four
types of compound. Noun compound is dominant, then adjective compound,
verbal compound, neocclassical compound. The meaning of compound word
exocentric is dominant compared endocentric and compulative compound. The
difference between this research and the researcher‘s research is this research
uses Three Articles of The Jakarta Post to analyze compound words, while the
research researcher use novel The Little Prince to analyze.
The researcher choose the novel The Little Prince because this novel
tells about being an adult. Mature people ar people who are able to think and
act maturely, even though they may be older than me or all of you. Meanwhile,
adults are people whose ages cannot be counted on your fingers, even need to
be multiplied by one and a half, two, or three. Sometimes consider themselves
mature, wise, and all-knowing. In fact, they do not understand at all. This is
what Antoine De Saint-Exupery wants to convey in his small novel, which
8

teaches many things and maturity through people who have not yet reached
adulthood. An adult who has a thirst for existence, money, powe, loses
imagination and lives a life full of seriousness. While children are represented
as someone who is weak and does not have the existence or awareness of the
values of truth. The attitude of adults who are not healthy for existence can
have an impact on children such as the emergence of trauma, lack of
confidence, so that they always follow the wishes of adults and they do not
realize the potential that exists within themselves.
The research examines the types and meanings in the novel The Little
Prince novel with the title ―An Analysis of Compound Words in the The Little
Prince Novel‖

C. Focus and Sub-Focuses of the Research

Based on the background of the research, This research focuses on the analysis
types of compound word found in the The Little Prince novel. Meanwhile, the
sub focus of this research is about the dominant of compound word in the
The Little Prince Novel by Antonie de Saint-
Exupery based on Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy theory.

D. Formulation of The Problem

This research analyzed the compound words in the novel, so the formultion
of the problems are:
a. What are the types of compound words found in the novel ―The Little

11

H. Research Methodology
This research is a qualitative descriptive research since the researcher
would describe a certain object which in this case is types of compound words
that include in The Little Prince novel. Bodgan and Biklen said that qualitative
research is descriptive. The data collected is in the form of words and pictures,
rather than numbers, processing the data taken from various sources, such as
movie transcript, articles, etc.10 It means that qualitative focused on analyzing
the words, pictures, movies and another media through the method of
describing, it is used for measuring the data by numeric. Following the
explanations above the researcher used the qualitative data analysis to analyze
the types through the text in the The Little Prince novel.

1. Research Procedure
The research procedure is very important for knowing how the
data will be collected and for answering the questions of the research
problem. The researcher has to decide the right procedure to collect the
data. The steps that will apply in the study should be mutually
supportive of each other, in order the research has the right weight and
gives unquestioned conclusions.11

2. Research instrument
Research instrument is a tool used to collect, measure and
analyze data related to your research interest. In this research, the
researcher used document and the researcher herself as the key
instrument since the research analyze a novel. Sugiono said, documents
are notes of past events. Documents can be in format writing, pictures

or monumental works from someone.12 The documentation technique

of collecting data based on documentation such as book, journal, and
articles. The document use in this research, the novel from The Little
Prince. The researcher as the human instrument collected the data,
Identifying the data, classified the data, The data is calculated to find
out which type of compounds words are more dominant.

3. Data Source
In this research, the researcher blieves that it is highly impotant
to have a clear cut on what the data and source of data are. There are
two kinds of data in this study, namely primary data and secondary
data. First, primary data is data collected directly by researchers or can
be said to be original data. Primary data sources are collected from The
Little Prince novel by Antonie de Saint-Exupery in the form of words
that contain compound words. The novel was first released in New
York on April 6, 1943. Consists of 144 pages. Furthermore, secondary
data is data that already exists or is availble, The data can be in the
form of journals, essays, other research, the internet and books that can
be used as supporting documents.
According to Moleong the document can be used as a data
source and can be used as a proof, understanding and interpreting an
event.13 The researcher will do documentation by collecting data and
learn from novel.

4. Data Collecting Technique

Data collecting technique is a way in getting the data through one or
more techniques. In qualitative research, based on Ary there are three most

common data collection technique that can be used which are observation,
interview, and document or artifac analysis.14 In this case, the technique in
collecting the data was documentation. Documentation is a method used to
obtain information from written sources, wheter in the form of books,
magazines, ragulations, daily notes and so forth. In collecting the data,
there are some steps done by the researcher. Those are:
1. The first step of collecting the data is the researcher prepares the novel
of ―The Little Prince‖ written by Antonie de Saint-Exupery as well as
having a mature understanding of the ―Compound Words‖ as the core
component.
2. The second step that the researcher will do read the contents of the
novel carefully and underlining the words in novel that contained
compound word.
3. The next step is to identify the appropriate data. In this case, the
resercher focuses on thetypes of compound words in the novel.
4. The last step is the step the researcher rechecks the data collected in
order to have the data valid..

5. Data analysis
Data analysis in qualitative research is th process and the prepaton
are systematically obtained from the technical documentation, by way
forganizing data into categories, describe into the units, synthesize,
organize into a pattern, choose what is important and taht will be
studied and make conclusions ivittions of words or phrases separated by
category for theconclusion. Its means the technique to analysis of the data
is very important to make conclusion. Meanwhile, Bogdan defines data
analysis is the research process of systematically searching and

arranging the interview transcipt. Fieldnotes, and other to increas your on

undertanding oftermand to enable you to present what you have
discovered to others.15 In this research the data are analyzed by using the
some steps as follows:
a. Data managing
In data managing, the researcher organize files needed for data analysis
where in this reseacher gathers the novel to be read and has the guideline of
compound words categories handed.
b. Data managing
In data managing, the researcher organize files needed for data analysis
where in this reseacher gathers the novel to be read and has the
guideline of compound words categories handed.
c. Reading and noting
In this part of analysis, the researcher reads through text as well as
making notes
d. Classifiying the data
In this case, the researcher needs to classify or group the items to be
analyzed wheter they exsist in the text. In eddition, the resarcher also
reduces the data which is not relevantt or appropriate with the objective
of the research.
e. Interpreting
After having the data classified, the researcher makes sense of the data
naturally by relying on the appropriate theory. It is impotant to make a
note that the researcher needs to generalize the data naturally by using
direct interpretation
f. Representing
In this procedure, the researcher visualizes the data finding accurately.

The data can be display can be in terms of figures, tables, and of course
using the narrative presentation to explore the finding deeply.

6. Trustworthinessof the Data

It is improtant to step to determine whether the research data credible
and transferable. 16 To triangualate the data, Miles and Huberman divided the
method into four types. Below is the explanation about the four types of
triangulation:
a. Triangluation the Data Source
The triangulation of data source can be done by using some data resources
with different situations and circumstances such as the data that taken from the
different people, time or different places.
b. Methodological Triangualtion
The methodological triangulation can be done by using the finding from the
research that using the different method.
c. Research or Investigator Triangulation
This type of triangulation can be done by engaging some different researchers
to analysis the data.
d. Theoretical Triangulation
This last types is done by using some theories related to the research in
analyzing the data. Example: journal, article, book, expert of literature, etc.
From the definition of the triangulation types above, this research thesis
use the last type, theoritical trianglation to validate the data. It is also based on
the explanation on technique of data analysis part above. 17

I. Systematic Discussion
In here the writer divides this thesis organization in to six chapters. They
are:
Chapter 1: This is chapter is introduction wich consists of title
affirmation, background and limitation of the problem, identification of the
problem, formulation of researchproblems, objectives of the research,
significances of the research, relevant studies research methodology and
systematic discussion.
Chapter II: This chapter presents theory from expert to suport this research
study whichconsists of theory about morphology, word formation,
compound word, types of compound word, novel, elements and types of
novel.
Chapter III: This chapter consists of general description of the object in te
research which in this case is‖The Little Prince ‖ novel and there is data
and fact presentation of the research to show how the result of analysis will
be presented.
Chapter IV: This chapter presents the finding and discussion.

Chapter V: This chapter presents the conclusion and suggestion.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion
In this chapter the researcher discusses about conclusion of this
research entitled An Analysis of Compound Word In The The Little
Prince Novel` By Antonie de Saint-Exupery. The conlusion is
concluded from the research result and discussion that had been
analyzed by the researcher.
Types of compound words. The reseacher analyzed four types
of compound word. Those are compound nouns, compound verbs,
compound adjectives, and compound prepositions. Compound nouns
become the most dominant and the most productive compound in novel
the little prince. The research results showed that there are 80
compound words. Based on the types of compound words, there are 49
compound nouns. It is followed by compound verbs. There are 9
compound verbs. Compound adjective, there are 21 compound
adjectives. Meanwhile, compound prepositions as the least compound
which are only 1 compound prepositions. It can be indicated that the
dominant types of compound words in the The Little Prince novel is
compound noun.
In novel The Little Prince, the compound words have several
formations. In compound noun, there are four formations which are
formed by several lexical categories. There are noun + noun, verb +
noun, adjective + noun, and preposition + noun. In compound verb
there are four formations which are verb + verb, noun + verb, adjective
+ verb, and preposition + verb. In compound adjective there are three
formations which are adjective + adjective, noun + adjective and
preposition + adjective. Meanwhile, there are two formation in
compound preposition which are verb + preposition, adjective +
preposition.
69

B. Suggestion
From the conclusion above, the researcher recommends some
suggestion. The following suggestion are as follows:
1. For The Teacher
The teacher and educator should give the student
experience and material about compounding especially of
novel in learning literary work. So, the student can more
understand how word is formed.
2. For The Students
The students especially for English Students
Department should learn more about compounding
because it can help the student to understand the word
formation process.
3. For Next Researcher
The researcher hopes that the result of this research can
be used as a reference for other researcher who want to
know about word formation and literary work especially
in a novel. However, there are many thing that can be
analyzed in word formation such as derivation, blending,
clipping, acronym, etc. Meanwhile, in novel such as
theme, setting, character, point of view, etc. Hence, for
the next researcher has many those matters, and explore
more deeply.
