Part A – Case studies

Assignment Brief: Read the following case studies and respond


to the questions under each case study. You must demonstrate a
thorough application of the concepts learnt throughout the RPL
practitioner’s level II modules. Completed answers to the case
study should be uploaded as a word document on your ePortfolio
under the tab clearly labeled Case Studies. As you upload the
answers to the case studies in a word document format,
remember to set Share settings for the word document to
commenter rights to allow the assessor to mark the answers to
the case studies online.

Case study 1 (10 Marks)


Mosoti is a skilled carpenter with over 15 years of experience but
does not have formal certification. He applies for an RPL
assessment at Masosa Technical and Vocational Education and
Training (TVET) center for a formal certification in Level 6 in their
area of specialization. During the assessment process, Mosoti
faces several challenges:
a) He struggles to understand the assessment criteria because
he has never taken a formal exam.
b) His portfolio of evidence (PoE) lacks proper documentation of
his skills.
c) During the practical test, he performs well, but the assessor
finds it difficult to verify the authenticity of his previous
work.
d) The feedback process is unclear to him, and he is unsure of
what to do next after the assessment.
e) When he receives his results, he is informed that he has skill
gaps in certain areas and must undergo additional training
before certification.
Case study 1 questions
1. What steps could the RPL practitioners have taken to better
prepare Mosoti for the assessment process?
2. How could the assessment center ensure the reliability,
validity, authenticity, and sufficiency of Mosoti’s portfolio of
evidence?
3. Propose a structured feedback approach that would help
Mosoti understand his performance and next steps
effectively.
4. What alternative strategies could be used to assess Mosoti’s
skills beyond the traditional portfolio assessment?
Case study 2 (10 Marks)
Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA)
conducted an audit of RPL processes at Givudiani TTI to ensure
compliance with quality assurance standards. The audit revealed
several issues:
a) The center lacks a standardized approach to assessment
verification.
b) Feedback mechanisms between assessors and candidates
are inconsistent.
c) Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) processes are not well
documented.
d) Some candidates report bias in assessment outcomes due to
inconsistent evaluation criteria.
e) The post-RPL support system is weak, leaving candidates
without clear career or educational pathways.

Case study 2 questions


1. What are the key indicators that Givudiani TTI should include
in their monitoring and evaluation framework for RPL?
2. How can Givudiani TTI develop a standardized verification
process to ensure fair and consistent assessments?
3. Propose a strategy to strengthen post-RPL support services
at Givudiani TTI
4. What ethical issues arise from inconsistencies in assessment
criteria, and how should they be addressed by Givudiani TTI?
5. How can improving quality assurance in RPL benefit
stakeholders, including candidates, employers, and training
institutions?

Case study 3 (10 Marks)


Zawadi is a candidate who has come for RPL assessment in a
registered assessment center. Zawadi is received at the reception
and directed to the RPL desk. Zawadi is then received by the
counsellor who provides a seat and proceeds to have a
conversation with her on work experience and work expertise.
Counsellor: Good morning Zawadi? Zawadi: Good morning.
Counsellor: How can we help you?
Zawadi: Am here for the RPL assessment.
Counsellor: Can you hand in your evidence for assessment?
Zawadi: What is evidence?
Counsellor: You should have known about the evidence
before
coming to the assessment center. Can you come back
tomorrow
with the full Portfolio of Evidence to enable us to assess you

Zawadi: Okay. Is there no other way to assist me to gather


the
Portfolio of Evidence?

Counsellor: ‘’ongea vizuri’’ We can arrange for that.

Zawadi does not show up in the assessment center again after


the above conversation.
Case study 3 questions
1. In your own opinion what could be the reason why Zawadi
never showed up in the assessment center as requested?
2. If you were the counsellor, how would you have handled
Zawadi?
3. Propose any strategies that can be implemented in the
publicity and awareness stage to help candidates like zawadi
be well informed about the RPL process.

3. On the right-hand side click on “page” on the lower page there is a plus sign
“+” click on it to insert a page and name it as per the table of content
4. Input the pictures and content by click on the page and choosing on the
righthand side type of layout that you require.
5. Ensure you caption your evidence as per the requirements in the PCs
6. Publish the eportfolio and send the link to the Master Trainer Lead.
