WINTER -2023

ANSWAR ALL QUESTION (2*5=10)

1. What kinds of timber are used by carpenters? CO1
2. What is chiselling? CO2
3. Define single dovetail joint. CO5
4. What is lathe? CO3
5. Define lathe assosories. CO4
ANSWAR

1. Carpenters primarily use a variety of softwoods like pine, fir, spruce, and cedar for
framing and general carpentry work. Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, walnut, cherry, and
teak, are also utilized for specific purposes like furniture, cabinetry, and decking.
2. The upper surface of a room that you see when you look above you: The kitchen ceiling
needs painting. A ceiling is also an upper limit put on something that varies: There is a
10% ceiling on rent increases.
3. A single dovetail joint, also known as a half-blind or single-lap dovetail, is a
woodworking joint where one piece has a series of pins (the "male" part) that interlock
with matching "tails" (the "female" part) on another piece. These pins and tails have a
trapezoidal shape, and the joint is typically glued together, creating a strong, secure, and
aesthetically pleasing connection.
4. A lathe is a machine tool that rotates a work piece, allowing a cutting tool to shape it by
removing material. It's known for its versatility in metalworking and woodworking,
enabling various operations like turning, drilling, and threading.
5. Lathe accessories are supplementary components used with a lathe machine to enhance
its functionality and versatility. They are designed to hold, support, or rotate work pieces
and tools, enabling the lathe to perform a wider range of machining operations
a. Chucks: Universal chucks (3-jaw and 4-jaw) and collet chucks.
b. Face Plates: Used for holding irregular shapes or work pieces that cannot be
held by a chuck.
c. Centers: Live and dead centers for supporting and aligning work pieces.
d. Mandrels: Used for supporting hollow work pieces.
e. Lathe Dogs: Used to drive work pieces from a face plate.

ANSWAR ALL QUESTION (1*7 =7)

1. What is timber?
2. What is mortise joint?
3. What is tenon joint?
4. What is dovetail joint?
5. What do you mean by external v thread in lathe?

6. What is turning?
7. What is tapper turning?
ANSWAR

1. The word timber refers to the wood used for construction. This word derives from old
English word 'timbrian' which means 'to build'. Timber has been one of the primary
materials of engineering construction; it is widely used for structural purpose. Living tree
yielding good timber is called standing timber.
2. A mortise joint, also known as a mortise and tenon joint, is a type of woodworking joint
that connects two pieces of wood by inserting a tenon (a rectangular piece of wood) into a
corresponding mortise (a hole or recess in the wood). This creates a strong, durable
connection, often used in furniture and other woodworking projects.
3. A tenon is a projecting member in a piece of wood or other material, typically
rectangular, that is designed to fit into a mortise (a hole) in another piece, creating a
joint. This joint, known as a mortise and tenon joint, is a strong and reliable way to
connect wood pieces, often at a 90-degree angle.
4. A dovetail joint is a woodworking technique used to join two pieces of wood at a 90-
degree angle, creating a strong and durable connection. The joint is characterized by
interlocking patterns of "tails" and "pins" that resemble a dove's tail, hence the name.
5. External threading on a lathe is a machining technique used to create threads on the outer
surface of a work piece, transforming it into a threaded shaft, bolt, rod, or other
components. This process enables the work piece to be joined with complementary
internal threads or fasteners, facilitating secure connections.
6. Turning is a machining process where a cutting tool removes material from the outer
surface of a rotating work piece, typically cylindrical. This process creates cylindrical
shapes by moving a tool along the work piece’s axis of rotation while it spins.
7. Taper turning is a lathe operation where the diameter of a cylindrical work piece is
gradually reduced or increased along its length, creating a conical or tapered shape. This
is achieved by moving the cutting tool at an angle to the work piece’s axis. Various
methods, including using a broad nose form tool, setting over the tailstock, or utilizing a
compound rest, can be employed for taper turning.
