This morning, I am expecting you to

prohibition, and obligation, appreciate the
importance of using modals to
communicate rules and responsibilities in
daily life and use modals fluently and

rules using the modals of permission,
prohibition and obligation.

Now, let’s start with a quick game. I’ll


show you some pictures, and you tell me
what people can, must, or mustn't do.

What does this sign mean? You mustn’t smoke here.


What is the student doing? He’s asking for permission. So, he can
say what he wants to say.

Why is she wearing a helmet?


She must wear it for safety.

b. Analysis

Now, let’s look at the words you used,


must, can, mustn’t. Class, these are
called modals.

So, what is modals?

Modals are auxiliary verbs that help us to


express or show permission, prohibition
and obligation.
