Hey everyone, this is my exam 1 review for statics Fall 2023. This review contains many problems
related to the topics you can expect to see on the first exam. I should note that this review is no
indication of what you will see on the test. It’s completely based off what Dr. Filler said he will be
putting on the test and what I believe is important for you to know. This is not all you should use to
study, utilize the textbook/ tophat pages, the homework, and in class problems to help you get a
good idea of everything you might possibly be tested on.
Part 1 will consist of basic conceptual questions I believe you all should know by the time the exam
comes around. They will either be multiple choice, true/false, select all that apply, or fill in the blank
questions.
Part 2 will consist of a variety of standard FRQ style problems you all should be able to do. Some may
be a little tricky at certain spots but for the most part these problems are pretty straightforward, and
what I believe is most similar to something you could see on your exam.
Part 3 will consist of the “fun” stuff. Part 3 has what I consider to be “challenge problems”. These
problems are all pretty tough and will really test the extent of your capabilities. These problems are
almost certainly more difficult than something you would likely get on exam; however, I believe that
if you are able to solve all of these, then you could solve just about anything that gets thrown at you.
Don’t be discouraged if these problems seem way too difficult and scary, they are really just for if
you are looking for some time to kill and want some extra practice before your exam.
- Space out your review work / Don’t cram. If you give yourself time to rest in between
practice sessions it lets you relax more and approach the problems with a fresh mind which
is very important for this class.
- When it feels like things are rough and you are feeling discouraged, always remind yourself
of why you are doing this and why it’s important to you. It can definitely be hard at times but
try to find that internal motivation and persistence to get you through.
- Really think about what’s happening in every problem you do, why you do every step, the
correct vocab to describe the things you are doing, and if your answer is reasonable.
- Don’t hesitate to use your resources i.e. (Me, the TA’s, Peer Tutoring, office hours, or any
other means to get your questions answered) Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because that
is the only way to truly learn.
- Keep neat work, organized work is not only easier to grade and get partial credit for, but it
also helps you organize your thoughts better and find information easier.
- Give it your best shot and don’t worry about how others do, focus on making your best
effort to show what you are capable of.
- Always ask yourself, “Does this answer make sense?”, it will help you notice any mistakes
you could have made in your math or interpretation along the way.
I believe that each and every one of you are more than capable of doing well on this exam, what’s
more important is that you believe in yourselves and go into that exam feeling confident and calm.
