Module This module examines the theoretical background
Description of the Uganda taxation system and provides
students with a practical introduction to the major
taxes
Module The course will enable students to:
Objectives a) Explain the need for, and forms of, taxation
in all countries
b) Discuss the effects of a range of taxes on the
economy and society
c) Understand the definition and measurement
of income and the principles that govern the
eligibility of expenditure to be deducted in
determining assessable income
d) Understand important distinctions between
individuals and corporate entities, and
between capital and revenue items
e) Calculate taxable income for income tax
purposes and the liability of an individual
after applying reliefs and allowances, with
particular reference to traders and including
losses
f) Calculate an individual's income tax liability
for a tax year

Module This module focuses on how aggrieved to civil

formal court process or alternative dispute resolution
Module The module intends to:
Objectives a) educate students on the procedures used in
court when determining disputes between
parties, the steps that must be taken before the
case comes for trial, how trial itself is
conducted, enforcement of judgments and costs
of the sui
b) Help students appreciate procedural steps
taken by a litigant or his/her counsel as well as
court so as to attain justice in civil matters.
c) Enable students distinguish substantive law
which prescribes the rights, which if later
violated give rise to a cause of action and
Procedural laws set out the rules and practices
which regulate the way in which rights and
liabilities are defended or enforced in court.
d) Equip students with knowledge on civil
procedure and how it regulates the steps to be
followed by parties in a civil litigation from the
time the plaintiff commences the proceedings
up to the time of enforcing courts decision or
judgment.
e) Enable stufdents Appreciate the use of
procedural rules to advance client goals and
solve litigation problems, including making
strategic decisions about selection of a forum,
how to frame a pleading or motion, whether to
seek sanctions, how to gain information from
opponents in discovery, and how to present or
respond to pretrial and trial stage motions
f) Empower students with knowledge to
appreciate the ethical limitations on pleadings,
motions, and discovery devices in civil litigation.
Learning On successful completion of the module, a student

a) Analyse the steps prior to litigation and
commencement of civil litigation.
b) Assess the nature, function ,form of pleadings
and its particulars
c) Examine interlocutory procedures that may
arise when defending a civil suit.
d) Evaluate and analyse non-litigious avenues of
dispute resolution.

underlying theories and policy rationales, in the
following areas:

to reach the correct (or best) legal answers to
hypothetical problems of civil litigation involving

procedural system, even with the best of
intentions, require difficult choices that may

advocacy, and adjudication, so that students
come to appreciate the real-life consequences,

Module This module focuses on International structures, policies,
Description and procedures in industrial relations conflict resolution
under arbitration and bargaining. The module further covers
topicsand issues on importance in employment and
industrial law field. others include the nature and purpose
of the legal system and industrial law, the law concerning
the contract of employment, trade union law, and industrial
law powers of governments.
The duties of employers and employees under the law
especially the Employment Act 2006.This module gives the
salient provisions in the law with regard to the formation of
the employment contract, formalities of forming the
contract, duties imposed on both the employee and
employer under the contract. It also highlights the obligation
of the employer to give leave to the employees. This module
further discusses the modes of terminating the employment
contract, rights and duties imposed on either party to the
contract upon termination, covenants’ in restraint of trade
and remedies for breach of the employment contract.
Module The module intends to:
Objectives a) Help students learn the current employment situation
in Uganda
b) Provide students with knowledge of labour laws,
especially the nature and scope of labour law, the
rationale of labour law laws in organizations, the
laabour laws in Uganda, occupational hardzards and
risks and managing employee relations at work.

problems and issues in arbitration and bargaining
