BI-AXIALLY ORIENTED

POLYPROPLYENE
FILMS
Name:- Shashikant
Roll No.:- PG/M/24/062
INTRODUCTION
Films which are produced from Polypropylene (PP) using the biaxial orientation process is usually designated as BOPP ( biaxially
oriented polypropylene).
Biaxial stretching of films is the process of forming hot plastic films in cross machine directions, resulting in a stronger film. The biaxial
stretching process is performed in two directions within the film. Machine direction and Traverse direction. Biaxial orientation is the
process whereby a plastic film or sheet is stretched in such a way that the polymeric chains are oriented in parallel to the plane of the
film.
BOPP film is a prominent material within the packaging industry, distinguished by its exceptional mechanical strength, optical clarity,
and versatility.

Manufacturing Process
Extrusion: Polypropylene resin is melted and extruded through a die to form a thick,
flat sheet known as a cast sheet or primary film.

Longitudinal Stretching (Machine Direction Orientation): The extruded sheet

passes through a series of heated rollers that stretch it in the machine (or
longitudinal) direction. This step aligns the molecular structure along the length of the
film, enhancing its strength and clarity.

Transverse Stretching (Cross Direction Orientation): The partially oriented film

then enters the tentering section, where it’s clipped onto the edges and stretched
sideways (transversely). This is achieved by gradually widening the clips' path in the
tenter frame, pulling the film apart across its width. This stage is critical for achieving
the biaxial orientation and further improving the film's toughness, stiffness, and
barrier properties.

Heat Setting: After stretching, the film is heat-set to lock in the molecular
orientation, stabilize dimensions, and reduce shrinkage. This is done at controlled
temperatures to prevent deformation.

Corona Treatment: To enhance the film’s adhesion properties, it undergoes a

surface treatment process, often called corona treatment. In this process, the film is
exposed to a high-voltage corona discharge, which increases its surface energy and
improves its printability and adhesive properties.
