1. SCOPE

The Method statement is to provide a guideline and establish the requirement for Testing of the
Bubble water test in Limestone filter building for the project Replacement of Technologies and
Ended Lifetime Assets of Al-Jubail Desalination Plant Phase-2.

2. PURPOSE

The purpose of this Method statement is to establish guidelines for the proper testing of the
Bubble water test in Limestone filter building to prevent damage caused by hydrodynamic
forces, internal pressures, and trapped air during testing and initial start-up.

3. RESPONSIBLITIES

 Mechanical Superintendent: Responsible for overseeing and controlling the equipment

installation work and testing, ensuring all necessary provisions are in place to perform
the activities.
 QC Inspector: Responsible for inspection activities related to equipment installation,
including:
o Verifying approved drawings and manufacturer's recommendations.
o Inspecting delivered equipment for any damage.
o Conducting inspections as per the Inspection and Test Plan (ITP).
o Confirming that all punch list items are cleared.
o Ensure all equipment is calibrated and functioning properly.

4. EQUIPMENT FOR TESTING

 Air Testing
 Water – adequately supply of clean disinfected water
 Pumps – 2 Nos. duty, Capacity 4,575 m³/h each, DOL driven
 Temporary Blowers – 2 Nos. duty, Capacity 6,405 m³/h, DOL driven
 Piping – to connect with the Blower and pump air through the flume inlet pipe
 Valves – as required to operate and control the blower
 Relief and venting systems for Blowers
 Vent pipe in the flume
 Stopwatch or timer

5. PRELIMINARY CHECKS BEFORE TESTING

 Inspect the Intake water Manifold for any post-installation damage.

 Ensure that all orifice holes and depressions around the orifices in the top deck are open.
 Review the piping system and confirm that air release valves are installed at all high
points and are operational.
 Verify that vacuum check valves are installed on any air release valves in piping subject
to negative pressures.
 Confirm that the entire wash water piping system is free of air before backwashing, using
a water pressurization system to slowly fill the system if necessary.
 Ensure all open/close filter valves have been recently exercised and are fully operational.

 Verify that all flow control loops are tested, calibrated, and functional.
 Confirm that all air release and vacuum check valves are operational and functional.
 Check that the blower, along with its relief and venting systems, is fully operational.

6. PRECAUTIONS

 Never backwash the filters using dirty water.

 Ensure flow measurement and control devices are operational before backwashing the
system.
 Avoid subjecting the Intake water manifold to hydraulic surges (water hammer) by
turning pumps on with valves open or by quickly opening air blower valves.
 Do not increase the water backwash rate to a high value before purging air from the
Intake water manifold.
 Never fill a dry filter from the top.
 Avoid frequent major changes in flow rate during filtration.
 Periodically disinfect the filter to minimize biological or algal growth.
 Maintain accurate flow monitoring and control equipment for both water and air
backwash systems.
 Always follow the recommended procedures in the Installation, Operation, and
Maintenance manual for plant operation.
 Ensure the testing area is well-ventilated and free from hazards.

7. TESTING

Before placing the support Calcite media, it is essential to test the Intake water manifold to
ensure proper installation. All systems must be tested using water, and systems that incorporate
air in the backwash cycle must also undergo air testing.

 Preparation for Testing:

Before testing the Intake water Manifold, Check the following points:
 All open/close filter valves should be recently exercised and fully operational.
 All flow control loops must be tested, calibrated, and functional.
 All air release and vacuum check valves must be verified as operational and
functional.
 The Temporary blower and its relief and venting system must be operational.
 An adequate supply of clean, disinfected backwash water must be available for
testing.
 Testing personnel should be properly trained to operate the system without
causing hydraulic surges (water hammer), which can damage the integrity of the
filter.

 Air bubble test and distribution

 Close outlet treated water valve. Open inlet valve of the cell and turbid water outlet
valve.

 Fill with water the cell until half height of the calcite bed. Once water achieves that
height, close the inlet valve of the cell.
 Open air inlet valve.
 Allow entry of air flow (75 Nm3/m2/h) through intake manifold and visually verify
that the air bubble distribution is homogeneous. If the air bubble distribution is not
homogeneous empty the cell and check that the filter nozzle are clean or any
trapped particle.
 Once the issue is Rectified, Repeat the Steps again unless and until the Air Bubble
distribution are homogeneous.

8. SAFETY ISSUES

 Control Measures
 Toolbox Meeting: Conduct a toolbox meeting before work begins to discuss the
importance of fall protection and correct rigging procedures.
 Weather Conditions: No erection activities allowed during harsh weather, such as
wind exceeding 32 km/h, thick fog, heavy sandstorms, rain, etc.
 Tag Lines: Use a minimum of two tag lines to control the load.
 Restricted Area: The area affected by erection activities will be a restricted zone, with
barriers and notices to prohibit entry of non-erection personnel.
 Simultaneous Activities: No simultaneous activities will be allowed below any
erection work. Enforce a strict 100% tie-off policy.
 Scaffolds: Scaffolds must be erected by trained personnel, inspected for safety, and
have proper access provided.
 Work Permit System: Ensure the Work Permit System is in place and maintained.
 Emergency Contacts: Post emergency contact numbers at work areas.
 Temporary Systems: Display Temporary Amended System Route plans, ensuring
clean and clear access and ingress to work areas without obstructions.

 Worker Information: Inform workers of safety measures through their respective

supervisors/foremen, who have obtained the methods from safety officers and site
engineers.
 Construction Manager: The Construction Manager shall advise concerned personnel
about any circumstances or changes related to the work.

 Monitoring and Compliance

The Safety Supervisor will be responsible for overall coordination, information dissemination,
and continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with the method statement. Prior to the
execution of works, the Construction Supervisor will thoroughly review the plan and proceed
with the work as outlined. Additionally, the Construction Manager will play an integral role in
assisting with the monitoring process to ensure that all safety and construction procedures are
being followed in accordance with the established guidelines.

 Fire prevention & protection plan

It is very important to make the Fire prevention and protection plan.

The scope of the plan addresses those areas that present a potential for the ignition and spread
of fire, and the applicable preventive /protective measures to be implemented (examples
Permit- To- Work, housekeeping, smoking, fire watch, firefighting systems, handing and storage
of chemicals.
