Article 1

(2021). Social media and mental health among early adolescents
in Sweden: A longitudinal study with 2-year follow-up (KUPOL
study). Journal of Adolescent Health, 68(5), 953-960.
What type of article is this? The article is a longitudinal study. This is a class selection
since the empirical findings were derived from a systematic
investigation of a longitudinal cohort study, which is a typical
approach in original research articles that are presented in
peer reviewed journals like Journal of Adolescent Health.

health symptoms were assessed with the Strengths and
Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)24.
What are the main findings or The study found that increased social media use was associated
information of the article? with increased symptoms of mental health problems (higher SDQ
score). However, in the vast majority of those prior cases, the
relationship was found at the between person level, rather than
changes within person over time.
The associations indicate that people who use social media have
mental problems, but using social media doesn't make one sick
mentally.

What are the main findings or Friends typically select similar others; ie, in terms of behaviors,

conflict and problematic social media use among Chinese
adolescents: The mediating roles of self-esteem and maladaptive
cognition toward social network sites. Addictive Behaviors, 112,
106601.

found certain relationships between variables with a defined
sample and established measurement scales.
How do you know what type of The research article investigates addictive Behaviors. It is a peer
article it is? reviewed journal dedicated to handling original research articles
dealing with all topics of addiction, including behavioral addictions
like problematic social media use.
What are the main findings or The study examines the relationship between perceived
information of the article? interparental conflict and problematic social media use (PSMU)
among adolescents, focusing on the mediating effects of self-
esteem and maladaptive cognition. Key findings include:
The research found that higher levels of perceived interparental
conflict were positively associated with increased PSMU among
adolescents.
Maladaptive Cognition: The association between interparental
conflict and PSMU was significantly mediated by maladaptive
cognition toward social network sites, suggesting that negative
thought patterns about social media can exacerbate the impact of
parental conflict on social media behavior.
Self-Esteem: Self-esteem also played a mediating role; lower
self-esteem was linked to both higher perceived interparental
conflict and greater PSMU. The authors noted that maladaptive
cognition and self-esteem sequentially mediated the relationship,
indicating a complex interplay between these factors.

According to the three studies social media impacts on youths in terms of, community
building, balancing opportunities for self-expression, and exposes them to risks like mental
health challenges, and cyberbullying. Social media also influences the decision making of
adolescents as well as identity formation. In some cases, it often amplifies peer comparisons
and privacy concerns. Conversely, platforms provide support networks and spaces for
activism, with 58–67% of adolescents reporting enhanced feelings of acceptance and
community. There is need to implement preventive strategies such as parental control,
literacy, parental oversight, and policy interventions to promote responsible use of social
media.
Identify what more might be interesting to know about the topic you selected that was not studied in
the five articles. Write 1–2 sentences to answer.
Some of the interesting facts that I would like to explore include the long-term effects of social
media exposure into adulthood. Further, I would like to explore the cultural variations in terms
of how social media impacts this age group. Additionally, I would like to explore the role of
algorithm-driven content in shaping adolescent behavior and mental health.
