Power Distribution Unit Types
PDU redundant operation

The PDUs can be

located outside of
the white space,
on the raised floor,
adjacent and
inside racks

They can be set

up to operate in a
redundant fashion
to supply alternate
power sources to
the racks
Power Distribution Units (PDUs) types
Floor Mounted PDU

• Electrical transformation
• Metering and monitoring
• Typically cabling to racks by contractor
• Some modular designs with prefabricated cabling
• IT rack and hot/cold aisle integration

Track Busway

• Overhead
• Under raised floor

Rack PDUs (located in an IT rack)

• Basic power strip

• Metered & Switched

Panelboard Distribution

• Wall mounted
Floor Mounted PDU
Integrated transformer
• Voltage transformation and isolation
• K-rated for nonlinear load, harmonic currents
• Typically: 208Y/120V, 480Y/277V; Current of ~400A

2 to 4, 42 circuit panels for electrical

distribution

Main and branch circuit power metering and

quality

Integrated display

Remote communications
• Typically Modbus RTU or SNMP

Computer-grade grounding
Basic Rack PDU
A single input with
multiple output
receptacles Side mounted
• Side mount (zero U vertical PDU
space) or rack
mount (1U space)
• Single or three
phase possible
• Typically 120/208V,
208-240V to match Rack mounted
server needs horizontal PDU
• Often 16-30A for
lower density racks
• 60A+ for high
density rack
Rack mounted PDUs

The PDU can be installed at the factory or on site

Track Busway as a PDU
Track busway • Plug-in units can be added when
can be installed needed
over IT • Plug-in units with a wide range of
equipment receptacles, circuit breakers, drop cords,
outlets, metering options
rows. Changes • Removes under-floor power cabling
are easier

• 100A or 225A, 600V, 3 pole

Typical bus • Available as low as 40A, as high as
ratings 800A system
• Neutral and ground bus available.

installed for the needed
maximum
expected load
Panelboard Distribution

Used for small capacity installations, low

density racks.

When low initial first cost is a priority.

IT changes are not likely or frequent.

Can accommodate unique rooms.

Easily available, quick contractor

implementation.

Can include branch circuit monitoring

and main metering.

Typically: 480Y/277V, 208Y/120V, up to

400A, up to 65kAIC, up to 75kVA
Three Phase PDUs
Three- • Typical ratings: 208-240V, three-
phase input phase
with • 400-415V PDUs have internal line-
to-neutral wiring which supplies
multiple servers with 240V 1-phase power.

Power Distribution Unit Functionality
Intelligent PDUs
Often called iPDUs

Monitored:
• Provides real-time remote monitoring of connected loads: V, A, kW up to 99%, billing grade accuracy.
• User-defined alarms warn of potential circuit overloads before critical IT failures occur.
Switched:
• Provides remote on/off switching control of individual outlets for power cycling, delayed power sequencing, and outlet use management.

Network connectivity:
• via Web, SNMP, Telnet, Modbus, etc.
• Users can access, configure, manage PDUs remotely.
• Allows integration with DCIM, EPMS etc.

Local digital display

• Helps avoid overloaded circuits via warning when the current draw is close to the maximum amperage

Granular view and control

• Power analysis, energy management and power information for provisioning and capacity planning.
• Advance options included equipment discovery.
PDU options

Rack mounted PDUs have plenty of options for monitoring and control.
Receptacle / Plug Types
NEMA 5-15P
Receptacles / Plugs come in a
number of types to help restrict
improper connections
NEMA 1-15P
• Type dictates the form factor
• P = Plug (male)
• R = Receptacle (female) IEC 320 C13/C14
• L= Locking
