CHAPTER 1

In this chapter, it discusses why use of library should be studied and taken seriously. Often
schools offer and/or require students to take a library course because it helps students learn how
to discover information sources within that particular library. The library and its resources
determine the quality of education for students. Students are faced with challenges such as
information explosion, a load of assignments and projects, and the library being too complicated
for them. Hence, they need to study the use of library. It was for this reason why Ranganathan
(1931) formulated the five laws of library science. Thus, this course is taught to expose students
to the various library information resources and how to access and use them at any point in time
with the information revival tools. Without learning the necessary library use skills and
techniques, library users will always meet frustration and dissatisfaction in information search.
Thus, this course will avail students the opportunity of becoming information literates. Anybody
can study the use of library- not just students. Studying the use of library has so much
importance such as the ability to know, and much more.

CHAPTER 2

In this chapter, it talks about libraries and their history. A library is a collection of organized
knowledge in all forms made up of book and non-book materials. The library trails back to the
old days when it was just oral communication to writing. The first books were carved on rocks,
barks of trees to scrolls and clay tablets. The chapter also talks about libraries through the ages.
In ancient ages the Summerians used a system of writing called cuneiform. They made their
books and libraries out of soft clay and a wedge shaped stylus of metal or wood. It eventually
evolved to papylus then quill and paper. In the middle ages, this was when books started to get
printed out on paper. This was lead by Charles the Great. This was known as the revelationary
age for libraries. In the modern times, different types of libraries started popping out everywhere.
The library has developed a great deal from ancient to modern times.
