USES FOR INDIVIDUALS:

1. Access to remote information

2. Person-to-person communication

COMMUNICATION CHANNEL

A pathway through which information is transferred:

2. Half Duplex – Two-way but one at a time (e.g., two-way radio)
3. Full Duplex – Two-way simultaneously (e.g., phone call)

NETWORK TOPOLOGY

Refers to the layout or arrangement of computers in a network.

Types:

1. Bus

6. Mesh

2. Ring

COMPUTER NETWORK ARCHITECTURE

Describes how physical and logical components are structured for

communication and sharing.

Types:

1. PAN (Personal Area Network) – Within ~10 meters (e.g., phone to

printer)
2. LAN (Local Area Network) – Small areas like offices or schools;
uses client-server setup
3. CAN (Campus Area Network) – Connects LANs in nearby buildings
(e.g., a university)
4. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) – Connects LANs across a city
using high-speed lines like fiber optics
5. WAN (Wide Area Network) – Covers large areas (e.g., cities,
countries); Internet is the largest WAN
6. SAN (Storage Area Network) – High-speed network for data
storage and server communication

NETWORK LINK

A physical communication path between devices.

Types of Links:

 Point-to-Point – Direct connection between two devices (e.g., TV

and remote)
 Broadcast/Multipoint – One link shared by 3+ devices:
o Spatially Shared – Multiple devices use the link at once
