7 Read the article below and answer the questions.

T  PARK: A waste-to-energy facility

In Hong Kong, sludge is collected in sewage treatment works. Disposing of the sludge
in landfills is not a sustainable waste management solution. T  PARK is built in Tuen
Mun to make use of the sludge to generate electricity.

The sludge is burnt in large furnaces in T  PARK. The thermal energy given out is
used to drive a turbine for generating electricity. The electricity is used to power
various machines in T  Park. After burning, the volume of the ash produced is only
10% of the original sludge. The ash is then disposed of in landfills.

Ea Suggest how sludge is collected in the sewage treatment process. (2 marks)

b Explain why disposing of sludge in landfills is NOT a sustainable waste management
solution. (1 mark)
c Describe how T  PARK acts as a ‘waste-to-energy’ facility. (2 marks)
