Unit 5: Forces and Electricity

Lesson 9: Float/Sink Review

By the end of the week, you will be able to…

use force diagrams to describe effects of forces

find out that the mass and shape of an object can affect
whether it floats or sinks

make predictions and find out whether our predictions were

correct
☆☆☆ Can explain features that help to maintain
balanced forces

☆☆ Can explain motion based on resultant

force

☆ Can describe the forces acting on objects

in water
Forces Acting on Floating and Sinking

weight due to
gravity
upthrust
(a force that pushes
an object up in water
or air)
Force Diagram of Floating

gravity ● To float, the upthrust force must be

equal to the weight (N) of the
object itself.
● The net force on the object is zero.
● A floating object displaces its own
mass (kg) of liquid.
○ If the ball has a mass of 10kg,
upthrust
10 of water.
it will displace ___kg
Force Diagram of Sinking

gravity ● To sink, the weight due to gravity

must be greater than the upthrust
force.
● The mass of the object is greater
than the mass of water displaced
by upthrust.

upthrust
● Control: the container of water
● Independent: the number of coins in the raft
● Dependent: if the container sinks or floats
The mass of the raft was less than the mass of
water it displaced as a result of the upthrust.
The mass of the raft and the coins was more
than the mass of water displaced as a result of
the upthrust.
They could make the raft wider or longer or both
(to increase the area).
