📝 Technical Brief – Smart Trawl Gear Uplifting System

📌 Project Title:
Smart Trawl Gear Uplifting System
A Real-Time Seabed-Aware Trawling Mechanism for Sustainable Fishing

🎯 Main Objective
Design and implement a smart trawl gear system that continuously monitors the distance
between the fishing gear and the seabed, and automatically adjusts the gear height
using the vessel’s winch system to:

● 🐟 Reduce bycatch and non-target species capture

● 🌱 Minimize seabed contact and habitat destruction
● 🧠 Enable data-driven trawling decisions through real-time feedback and a digital
dashboard

💡 Core Concept
This system transforms traditional trawling gear into a smart, adaptive system by
integrating:

● A seabed distance sensor mounted near the trawl’s ground rope or footrope

● A microcontroller with onboard logic to interpret distance data

● A link to the vessel’s winch control to trigger automated lifting or lowering of the
gear

● A dashboard interface for real-time monitoring, data logging, and manual override
🧰 Key Functional Blocks
Block Description

🟦 Seabed Distance Sensor Ultrasonic or sonar sensor mounted near

trawl footrope to measure distance to the
seabed in real time

🧠 Smart Control Module Microcontroller (e.g., ESP32 / STM32) with

onboard logic to interpret sensor data and
trigger responses

⚙️ Winch Uplift Interface Connection to vessel’s winch system to

lift/lower gear automatically
(electromechanical or relay interface)

📊 Dashboard Interface User interface for monitoring distance data,

gear position, and override controls
(web/mobile/tablet)

🔋 Power Supply Power source for onboard electronics

(battery or vessel power integration)

🧴 Waterproofing System Housing and sealing for all submerged

components

🧪 Use Case Scenario

During trawling, the seabed distance sensor continuously measures the gap between the
trawl net and the seabed.
If the gear approaches the seabed too closely (e.g., <1m), the system automatically
commands the winch to lift the gear.
All data is visualized live on a dashboard for the captain or crew, with alerts and manual
control options.
