Beam with more detailed and technical implementation of design aspects.

Fig. Example of Bar Bending Schedule for Detailed Beam

The above beam has a clear span of 6 metres and is made up of two layers of the bottom (2 numbers of 20 mm
diameter) and one layer of the top (2 numbers of 12mm diameter). It is divided into three zones, with stirrups of 150
mm spacing in Zone 1 and Zone 3 and 200 mm spacing in Zone 2.

The observations that can be drawn from the above figure are:-

Clear Span of beam= 6000mm

Development Length (Ld)= 50d (assume)

Clear Cover on any ends= 25mm

Bottom= 4 numbers of 25 (phi)

Top= 2 numbers of 12 (phi)

Stirrups- Zone 1,3= 8(phi) @ 150mm clear cover.

Zone 2= 8(phi) @ 200mm clear cover.

Step 1- Cutting Length of the top bar (12mm dia@ 0.89kg/m)

Cutting Length of top bar= Clear span of beam + development length ((L_d)) on 2 sides - clear cover on 2 ends.

=(6000+(2times 50d)-(2times 50))

=(6000+(2times 50times 12)-50)

=7150mm
Step 2- Cutting Length of Bottom Bar (25mm dia@ 3.85kg/m)

Cutting Length of bottom bar= Clear span of beam + development length ((L_d)) on 2 sides - clear cover on 2 ends.

=(6000+(2times 50d)-(2times 50))

=(6000+(2times 50times 25)-50)

=8450mm

Step 3- The number of stirrups (8mm dia@ 0.39kg/m)

The number of stirrups required for Zone 1= (Clear Span of Beam/Spacing of Stirrups) + 1

=(2000/150) + 1= 14.3= 14 numbers.

The number of stirrups required for Zone 3= Same as Zone 1= 14

The number of stirrups required for Zone 2= (Clear Span of Beam/Spacing of Stirrups) - 1

=(2000/200)-1= 9 numbers.

The reason for the “minus 1 “ is that zone 1 has an end stirrup so we don’t need to again start from a new one. We
just continue with the stirrups already existing with extra spacing.

Total = 37 numbers

Step 4- Cutting Length of each stirrup

Length of one hook = 12d for 135 degrees

Cutting Length of stirrup= Perimeter of Stirrup + Number of Bends + Number of Hooks

= 2(a+b) +

(2(12 times d).

= (2(250+450) + (2(12 times 8)

=1592mm

Step 5- Weight of Stirrups

Total number of stirrups= 14+14+9= 37

Total length of stirrups= 37 times 1.792 = 66.304 m

Weight of stirrups = (d2 /162 =8 times 66.304162=26.194kg)
