Introduction

An extension cord is a handy tool that allows you to power devices when electrical
outlets are out of reach. Whether you need to charge your phone across the room,
connect outdoor lights, or use tools in your garage, having a reliable extension cord can
make life easier. Making your own extension cord can be a fun and educational project
that gives you the flexibility to tailor it to your specific needs.

Creating your extension cord also enhances your understanding of electrical

components and how they work together. You’ll become familiar with terms like “live wire”
and “neutral wire,” and you’ll learn how to safely connect them. By the end of this project,
not only will you have a functional extension cord, but you'll also gain valuable skills that
you can use for future electrical projects.

II. Materials Needed:

 Electrical Wire: Length of flexible electrical wire.

 Socket (Power Strip): A power strip with three outlets.
 Male Plug: A standard two-prong plug connects to a wall outlet.

III. Tools Needed:

 Pliers/Wire Cutter
 Gloves
 Screwdriver
IV. Procedure:

Step 1: Cut the Wire

 Measure how long you want the extension cord and cut the wire to that length.

Step 2: Strip the Wire

 Use the pliers to remove about 1 inch of plastic from both ends of the wire to expose the
metal inside.

Step 3: Prepare the Male Plug

 Open the male plug with the screwdriver.
 Find where to connect the wires (usually marked).
 Connect one wire to the live terminal and the other to the neutral terminal. Use the pliers to
ensure the connections are tight.

Step 4: Prepare the Power Socket

 Open the power strip.
 Connect the other ends of the wires to the matching points in the socket (live and neutral).

Step 5: Secure Everything

Make sure all wires are safely tucked away inside the plugs and sockets.

Step 6: Test the Cord

Check if the cord works properly by plugging it in and ensuring that power flows correctly to the
outlets.

V. Result/Conclusion

After completing this project, you will have a fully functional extension cord, ready to
use for powering your devices. By following the steps carefully, you’ve not only created a
practical tool but also gained valuable insight into the basics of electrical wiring and
safety. This hands-on experience enhances your understanding of electrical components
and their connections, making you more confident in handling similar projects in the
future. With your custom extension cord, you can efficiently power devices wherever
needed, ensuring convenience and accessibility in your home or workspace.
