FORCE

CLASS- IX FM- 20

A. MCQ: 1×5=5

1. Choose the correct statements:

Statement 1: Unbalanced forces can change the direction of motion of a body.

Statement 2: A balanced force is required to accelerate the body.

Statement 3: An object moves with a uniform velocity when balanced forces are acting on it or if there is no net force acting
on it.

Statement 4: Balanced force cannot bring an object at rest to motion.

a.Only statement 1 b. Statements 1, 3 and 4 c. Statements 1, 2 and 3 d. Only statement 2

2. A player catches a ball of 200 g moving with a speed of 20 m/s. If the time taken to complete the catch is 0.5 s, the force
exerted on the player’s hand is;

a. 8 N b. 4 N c. 2 N d. 0 N

3. A constant force acts on a body of mass 0.9 kg at rest for 10s. If the body moves a distance of 250 m, the magnitude of
the force is

a. 3 N b. 3.5 N c. 4.0 N d. 4.5 N

4.A body of 5 kg is moving with a velocity of 20 m/s. If a force of 100 N is applied on it for 10 sec in the same direction as its
velocity, what will now be the velocity of the body?

a. 200 m/s b. 220 m/s c. 240 m/s d. 260 m/s

5. Assertion: Same force applied for the same time causes the same change in momentum for different bodies
Reason: The total momentum of an isolated system of interacting bodies remains conserved.

B. VERY SHORT ANSWER TYPE : 2×2=4

1. A shell of mass 0.025 kg is fired by a gun of mass 200 kg. If the muzzle speed of the shell is 75 m/s. What is the recoil
speed of the gun?

2. A constant retarding force of 40N is applied to a body of mass 15 kg moving initially with a speed of 10 m/s. How long
does the body take to stop?

OR

What is inertial frame of reference? Action and reaction forces do not balance each other. Why?

C. SHORT ANSWER TYPE: 3×2=6

1. (a) State law of conservation of linear momentum.

(b) What is the minimum value of force F such that at least one block leaves the ground in the given figure?
OR

(a) Three blocks A, B, and C of masses 4 kg, 2 kg, and 1 kg respectively, are in contact on a frictionless surface, as shown.
If a force of 14 N is applied to the 4 kg block, then the contact force between A and B is:

(b) Which law gives the concept of force? 2+1

2. (a) A bird is sitting on the floor of a wire cage, and the cage is in the hand of a boy. The bird starts flying in the cage. Will
the boy experience any change in the weight of the cage?

(b) A truck of mass 3000 kg is moving at 10 m/s and is acted upon by two forces, a driving force of 1000 N and friction force
400 N. How far will it travel in 10 s? 1+2

D. LONG ANSWER TYPE: 5×1=5

1. (a) Suppose a ball of mass m is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed v, its speed decreases continuously till it
becomes zero. Thereafter, the ball begins to fall downward and attains the speed v again before striking the ground. It
implies that the magnitude of initial and final momentums of the ball are same. Yet, it is not an example of conservation of
momentum. Explain why ?

(b) An object of mass 5kg is moving on a rough road. Find friction force applied on the object.

(c) A lift is an acceleration upward. Will the apparent weight of a person inside the lift
increase, decrease, or remain the same relative to its real weight? What happens if the
lift is going at a uniform speed? 1.5+2+1.5
