My best friend asked me to make a speech at her wedding. Of course I said “yes.” But
then I started to worry and thought I had made a big mistake. You see, I’m just
hopeless at public speaking. It makes me feel really anxious, and I don’t have any
confidence at all. I’ve made a fool of myself many times. Anyway, this time I decided to
try really hard because Suzie is one of my oldest friends, and I didn’t want to turn down
her request. I wrote the speech, learned it, and then practiced it in front of a mirror. On
Suzie’s wedding day, I got through my speech just fine. The other guests enjoyed it,
and Suzie was very happy. But after that, I told myself I would never do it again.

I was invited to an interview for a study-abroad program in Peru. I really wanted to go
to Peru, but the interview was in Spanish, and I wasn’t confident about my speaking
skills. I decided to practice repeating sentences and pieces of dialogue, hoping that
they would come up during the interview and that I wouldn’t mispronounce anything.
I also practiced speaking Spanish with a friend. The interview was with a very nice
woman, and it lasted only 20 minutes, but it felt like two hours! In the end, I was
accepted to the program, and I spent a year in Peru. It was one of the best experiences
of my life.
