Electrical Paper 2023 - Answer Key

Part A – Objective/Short Answer Questions

1. 1. What is the SI unit of electric current?
Answer: Ampere (A)
2. 2. Name the material used for making electric wires.
Answer: Copper
3. 3. What is Ohm’s Law?
Answer: Ohm’s law states that the current (I) through a conductor between two points
is directly proportional to the voltage (V) across the two points, provided the
temperature remains constant. V = IR
4. 4. What happens to the resistance of a wire if its length is doubled?
Answer: Resistance doubles. R ∝ L
5. 5. What is the function of a fuse in an electric circuit?
Answer: A fuse protects an electric circuit by melting and breaking the circuit when the
current exceeds a safe level.
6. 6. Name a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Answer: Electric Motor
7. 7. What is the frequency of AC supply in India?
Answer: 50 Hz
8. 8. What type of current is used in households?
Answer: Alternating Current (AC)
9. 9. Define electric power.
Answer: Electric power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed or converted
into another form. P = VI
10. 10. Name the component used to store electric charge.
Answer: Capacitor

Part B – Descriptive Questions

11. 1. State and explain Ohm’s Law with a diagram.
Answer: Ohm’s Law states that the current passing through a conductor is directly
proportional to the voltage across it, provided the temperature remains constant.
Mathematically, V = IR, where V = Voltage (Volts), I = Current (Amperes), R = Resistance
(Ohms).
Diagram: A simple circuit with a battery, resistor, and ammeter in series.
12. 2. Differentiate between series and parallel circuits (with diagrams).
Answer: Series Circuit: Components connected end-to-end. Same current flows through
all, but voltage divides.
Parallel Circuit: Components connected across the same voltage source. Voltage is same,
but current divides.
Feature | Series Circuit | Parallel Circuit
--------|----------------|------------------
Current | Same through all elements | Divided among branches
Voltage | Divided across elements | Same across each branch
Resistance | Total resistance adds up | Total resistance decreases
Failure of one | Affects entire circuit | Other branches work normally
13. 3. What is electric power? Derive the formula for electric power.
Answer: Electric power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed.
P = VI
From Ohm’s Law: V = IR
So, P = I²R or P = V²/R
14. 4. Write short notes on:
(a) Fuse
(b) MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)
Answer: (a) Fuse: A safety device that melts and breaks the circuit when excess current
flows.
(b) MCB: An automatic switch that turns off when overload or short circuit occurs. It can
be reset manually.
15. 5. What is earthing? Why is it important?
Answer: Earthing is the process of transferring electrical charge directly to the ground
using a low-resistance wire.
Importance:
- Prevents electric shocks
- Protects appliances
- Provides a safe path for fault current
16. 6. Explain how an electric bell works.
Answer: When current flows, the electromagnet attracts the iron strip, causing the
hammer to strike the bell.
This also breaks the circuit, turning off the electromagnet.
The strip returns, reconnecting the circuit, and the process repeats.
17. 7. Explain the construction and working of a dry cell.
Answer: Construction: Zinc container (negative terminal), carbon rod (positive
terminal), manganese dioxide, and ammonium chloride paste.
Working: Chemical reaction between zinc and electrolyte produces electrons that flow
through the external circuit.
18. 8. What are conductors and insulators? Give examples.
Answer: Conductors: Materials that allow electric current to pass through (e.g., copper,
aluminum).
Insulators: Materials that do not allow electric current to pass through (e.g., rubber,
plastic).
19. 9. State the advantages of a parallel circuit over a series circuit.
Answer: - Each appliance gets equal voltage
- One device can work even if another fails
- Easier to add or remove components
- Lower total resistance
20. 10. Draw the symbols for:
- Cell
- Battery
- Resistor
- Switch (open and closed)
- Lamp
Answer: Answer: Use standard electrical circuit symbols. [Diagram can be added if
needed].
