Introduction

The PEC400 Teamwork Skills subject is an important part of our learning as students,
especially in preparing us for real-life situations where teamwork is essential. In any career or
working environment, knowing how to work with others, communicate clearly, take leadership
roles, solve problems, and handle conflicts is very important. This subject teaches us those skills
and gives us the opportunity to apply them in group activities and challenges. One of the key
areas we focused on in this subject is conflict management, which means how to deal with
misunderstandings, disagreements, or pressure within a team in a calm and productive way.

To apply what we have learned, our class organized an activity called "Conflict
Management: Manage Your Team". This activity involved two main challenges that required
teamwork, problem-solving, and good communication. The first challenge was the Trading Game
Card, and the second was the Blind Box and Maze Puzzle. These activities were designed to help
us practice teamwork in situations where quick decisions, cooperation, and clear roles were
needed.

In the Trading Game Card activity, we were divided into three teams, and each team
started with a mix of resource cards: Food, Water, Gold, Tools, and Medicine. The goal was to
trade with other teams until we collected three cards of each resource. However, there was a twist
each team was split into two smaller groups: traders and treasurers. Traders were the only ones
allowed to move and make trades, and they could only carry two cards at a time. This meant we
had to plan carefully, communicate clearly, and manage our resources wisely. This game helped
us understand how teamwork and negotiation are necessary when everyone has a different role
and access to limited information.

The second challenge, the Blind Box and Maze Puzzle, tested our ability to work together
under time pressure. First, we had to guess what was inside a mystery box without looking, using
only our sense of touch or hints. After that, we were given a maze puzzle that we had to solve in
just three minutes. This challenge pushed us to listen to each other, trust one another’s ideas,
think quickly, and make decisions as a group all while staying calm and focused.

2
Both of these activities helped us improve our teamwork skills, especially in terms of
managing conflict and making sure every team member worked together toward the same goal.
We experienced how communication, leadership, problem-solving, and emotional control can
make a big difference in team success.

Objectives

• To develop teamwork and cooperation skills under time and communication

constraints:
Students practiced working together effectively even when facing time limits and limited
ways to communicate, which is common in real-world situations.
• To practice clear communication and negotiation techniques within and between
teams:
Participants learned how to share information clearly and politely, and how to negotiate
deals that benefit their team while maintaining good relationships with other teams.
• To experience and manage conflict and misunderstandings during teamwork:
Teams faced small conflicts and misunderstandings during the activities, giving students the
chance to practice solving disagreements calmly and keeping the team focused on their
goals.
• To improve leadership, decision-making, and planning abilities:
Students had the opportunity to take leadership roles, make important decisions quickly, and
create strategies to help their teams achieve success.
• To build trust among team members by dividing responsibilities and working towards
a shared goal:
By giving different roles to team members (such as traders and treasurers), the activity
showed how important it is to trust each other and work together to reach the team’s
objectives.
• To encourage quick thinking and adaptability in changing situations:
During the activities, teams had to think fast, adapt their plans, and react to unexpected
changes or challenges, helping them become more flexible and resilient.

By engaging in these challenges, students had the chance to apply conflict management
theories into real team activities and reflect on their personal and group performance.

Game 1: Trading Game Card

Objective of the Game:

Each team must collect at least three cards of each resource type (Food, Water, Gold, Tools,
and Medicine) by trading with other teams as quickly as possible.

Materials Needed:

• 15 cards for each resource (Food, Water, Gold, Tools, and Medicine).

• Space for teams to set up separate trading and treasury areas.

Setup:

• Participants were divided into three teams.

• Each team started with a random set of 15 resource cards.

• Each team then split their members into two groups:

1. Traders: The members who carried cards to trade with other teams.
2. Treasurers: The members who stayed behind to hold and manage the team's cards.

Rules:

• Traders could only carry two cards at a time when making a trade.

• After every trade, traders had to return to their team before making another trade.

• Traders could only negotiate and exchange cards with traders from other teams.

• Teams were not allowed to change traders and treasurers once the game started.

• The first team to successfully collect three cards of each resource type won the game.

6
Skills Practiced:

• Communication: Traders had to clearly understand what resources the team needed
before going out to trade.

• Negotiation: Making deals and convincing other teams to trade fairly or advantageously.

• Planning and Strategy: Deciding which cards to trade first, how to prioritize needed
resources, and how to organize the team's trading system.

• Conflict Management: Resolving disagreements within the team (e.g., when deciding
on trading strategies) and handling competition with other teams.

• Time Management: Working quickly and efficiently to complete the task before other
teams.

Learning Points:

• Effective teamwork needs clear roles and trust between members.

• Communication must be short, clear, and direct when under pressure.

• Conflict and competition are natural, but managing them calmly leads to better results.

• Team success depends on good planning, quick decision-making, and supporting each
other's roles.

Game 2: Blind Box and Maze Puzzle

Objective of the Game:

To strengthen team collaboration and critical thinking by completing two tasks under time
pressure: first, identifying a hidden object without seeing it, and second, solving a maze puzzle
within a set time limit. The game encouraged fast decision-making, teamwork, and clear
communication in unfamiliar situations.

Game Details:

Part 1: Blind Box Challenge

• One or more team members were asked to feel an object hidden inside a covered box
and guess what it was, without looking.
• The rest of the team could ask questions or offer support, but no visual clues were given.
• This task tested the team’s ability to describe, listen carefully, and trust each other’s
input.

Part 2: Maze Puzzle

• After the blind box round, teams received a maze puzzle to solve within three minutes.
• Team members had to work together to find the solution before time ran out.
• Everyone had to communicate effectively, manage their roles, and make decisions
quickly under pressure.

9
Skills Practiced:

Problem-Solving: Teams had to figure out solutions based on limited information and work
together to complete each challenge successfully.

Trust and Support: The blind box activity required team members to trust the judgment of the
person guessing and to offer helpful clues or support.

Communication: Clear and focused communication was needed to ensure all ideas were
shared quickly and effectively, especially during the maze puzzle.

Learning Points:

• Even with limited information, teams can perform well if they stay calm, listen to each
other, and work together.
• Trusting team members' contributions, especially when they are in difficult positions,
builds stronger collaboration.
• Good communication and time management are critical in high-pressure situations.
• Thinking quickly and adapting to changes can make the difference between success and
failure in team tasks.
