When you think of a safari, what do you imagine? Lions, elephants and crocodiles? Are there
lizards in your tent? Are there mosquitoes biting you at night? Well, think again. You can
also go on safari in the snow! Would you like to see Arctic animals, such as polar bears with
their beautiful white fur? What about whale watching? Can you image being on a boat and
seeing a large tail crashing into the sea? Wonderful!
Many people love the idea of an adventure holiday in icy and snowy places like Canada,
Finland or Greenland. The adventure begins with the transport. People travel by boat,
snowmobile (like a motorbike on skis), or they ski or walk. Some prefer travelling by dog
sled pulled by huskies – the special dogs that live and work in snowy countries.
People on snow safari must be strong and healthy. The weather can be terrible. Sometimes
it’s very snowy and you can’t see anything on some days! Besides this, it can be very cold.
But this is all part of the adventure. You have to experience the bad with the good.
You can stay in different places too. It’s possible to stay at sea. There are beds on the boats.
Or, if you are travelling by snowmobile or dog sled, you can stay in cottages or small hotels.
There are even hotels made of ice in some places!

Ghost Town Tours!
Bodie, California
Bodie is an amazing town in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Nobody lives there now,
but between 1877 and 1881, nearly 10,000 people lived there. The last people left in the early
1960s. After that, the State of California made Bodie a State Historic Park.
History
In 1859, Mr W.S. Body found small pieces of gold there. Other people heard about the gold
and started to look for more. The town became larger – people built houses, bars, shops and
hotels. It was one of the most dangerous towns in the Wild West! Men argued and had fights,
and it was normal for people to die young. People were more interested in going to bars than
going to church. At one time, there were 65 bars and only two churches!
What you can see on your tour
There are about 100 buildings in Bodie. You can look inside the hotels, shops and a church.

Charlotte’s coming to Australia!
My cousin from Bristol is coming to visit me next week! I’m very excited. It will be
Charlotte’s first visit to Melbourne. She’s going to stay with us for two weeks.
We’re planning what we’re going to do during her stay. January is the middle of the summer
so it will be hot and sunny. We’re going to go to the beach and swim in the ocean every day.
We’re also going to spend some time shopping or going to concerts. On 20th January, my
friend Sienna is having a birthday party. I’m taking Charlotte there. She will meet all my
friends and I’m sure they will all like her. And our best plan: one weekend we’re flying with
my parents to Sydney! We’re going to stay in a youth hostel and we’re going to go
sightseeing a lot.
The biggest problem for Charlotte is what clothes to bring with her. Everyone tells her that
the weather in Melbourne changes very quickly and it can rain, snow and be sunny in one
day. I tell her not to worry because when it rains and you haven’t got an umbrella you just
need to wait five minutes and the weather changes again.
I’m going to write more about our plans in my next post. Have you got any ideas about other
things we could do?
