1. Attempt all Questions(all questions carry equal marks)
2. Neither any type of material such as Properties Table or Charts nor Programmable
Instructions Calculators are allowed in the Examination Hall.
3. Support your answer with Sketches or Diagrams where applicable.
4. Diagrams or Sketches should be drawn either by pencil or pen its on up to you but all
other Pencil work will be considered as rough work.
5. Assume missing data with justification.
6. Attempt ALL Questions on answer script.

SECTION A
Q-1 a) The dynamic business environment has changed the mindset of printing industry, which enhanced [10]
the focus towards waste management as its critical issue in printing industry. Printing waste is also
leading to financial loss and developing environmental issues. This scenario motivates to perform root
cause analysis of newsprint waste, which can help to reduce waste and to improve the environmental
conditions.

In the newspaper printing industry, high-speed web machines are used; this high speed causes enormous
wastage. The waste leads financial losses for printing industry as well as develops environmental issues.
The competitive business culture motivates printing industry to focus on environmental issues, which
change the approach of the printing industry towards waste management.

The newsprint waste is a combination of printed waste, sweeping waste, tear of waste, reel end waste, and
others. The data was collected for one month based on identified categories as define in the table given
below. Analyze the wastages by classifying them as most significant and least significant and
identify the waste category to be taken on priority.

S.No Type of Waste Frequency(kg/month)

1. Printed waste 1345
2. Sweeping waste 437
3. Tear off waste 320
4. Reel end waste 247
5. Others 167
b) What is the difference between control limits and specification limits? Define the average run length
(ARL). What is the advantage and disadvantage of having large or small values for the ARL?

A quality engineer in the semiconductor industry wants to maintain control charts for an important quality
characteristic. After collecting each sample, X-bar and R are computed. Suppose that 30 samples of size
n = 5 produce the following summary statistics:

Assuming that the quality characteristic is normally distributed and the specification limits are 15 ±
3.5; determine whether the process is capable.
[10]

Q-2 a) The following data show the number of nonconformities per 100 square yards (one unit) of woolen
cloth. Select and set up an appropriate control chart that you would use to determine whether the process
is in statistical control. Give your conclusion. On which probability distribution it is based. State the
reason.

Also construct the control chart by determining the trial control limits. If any points fall beyond the
control limits, assume that special causes are found, and determine the revised control limits by ignoring
the points beyond the control limits.

b- In a textile company, it is important that the acidity of the solution used to dye fabric be within certain
acceptable values. Data values are gathered for a control chart by randomly taking four observations from
the solution and determining the average pH value and range. After 25 such samples, the following
summary information is obtained:
The specifications for the pH value are 7.5 ± 0.5.
(a) Find the X- and R-chart control limits.
(b) Find the 1σ and 2σ X-chart limits.
(c) What fraction of the output is nonconforming (assuming a normal distribution of pH values)?

Appendix for X-bar & R-chart constants

[15]
Q-3 a) Discuss bath tub curve in context to reliability.

A remote control unit has 40 components in series. The reliability of each component is 0.9994. What is
the reliability of the remote control unit? Assuming each component has exponential time to failure
distribution with a constant failure rate of 0.00006/hr. Find MTTF for the system. Conclude your results.

b) What is Taguchi loss function?

The part dimension of a power tool is 30 ±0.25 mm and the quality loss coefficient is 2520 Rs /mm 2,
Calculate the expected loss.

c) A product is shipped in lots of size N = 2,000. Find a single-sampling plan for which the LTPD = 8%,
assuming that the process average is 2% defective.

Inspection type: Normal

General inspection level: 11
 Draw the OC curve. ( Use Poisson distribution to estimate the probabilities of acceptance for the
values of proportion defective from 0.01 to 0.08 in steps of 0.01).
 Find producer and consumer protection for the given quality levels
 What is the AOQL and ATI for the given process average?

Conclude your findings.

Note: All questions of “SECTION A” are related to CLO-1 which is linked to PLO-1 (Engineering Knowledge)
