CTF(Capture The Flag) – Rules & Regulations
A Capture The Flag (CTF) is a cybersecurity competition where participants solve challenges
in areas like hacking, cryptography, and forensics to find hidden "flags." These flags earn
points and simulate real-world security tasks, helping players build practical skills.
Onsite announcements
During the course of the competition there will be announcements made. Pay close attention
when they are made as they may mention hints about a specific challenge.
Challenges
The list of available challenges can be found at Challenges (available after competition
opens).
Reverse Engineering
Cryptography
• Entails analyzing digital artifacts to uncover hidden information, often involving file
analysis and data recovery techniques.
Programming
11
• Tests participants' ability to solve programming challenges efficiently under time
constraints, often in languages like C++, C#, and Python.GTECH TV
Miscellaneous
• Covers a range of challenges that don't fit into the above categories, potentially
including steganography, logic puzzles, and unconventional problem-solving tasks.
For each of the challenges, you will be able to find the following details:
● The name and IP of the challenge
● The difficulty of the challenge
● The number of flags and services
● If the challenge requires you to gain root access or not
Please note that the challenges are not allowed to connect to the internet. They can however
connect to the IPs assigned to you by the platform.
Claiming flags
The flags are usually prefixed with ETSCTF_ followed by the flag such as
ETSCTF_FLAG. Alternatively, the flag can be formatted such as ETSCTF{FLAG}. In
any case getting the FLAG portion is enough
Gameplay
You earn points when you discover and claim flags. These flags can be found anywhere on
a challenge system; in the form of files, variable names, database names etc. These are the
most common you can find are:

If you or any of your team members abuse their access to the systems, we reserve the right
to disqualify your team at our discretion. These decisions are un-revocable.
This server is not part of the challenges
Do not attack this server, web interfaces or network equipment you're connected.
Continuous attacks on the infrastructure will lead to account suspension for your entire
team.
No spoilers
Please be considerate about other users, don't spoil their fun. Do not share flags with other
teams or publish solutions on the internet before the conclusion of the event.
13
No mass scans
Do not perform mass scanning or brute force attacks on the systems unless you're instructed

CTF FAQs
Frequently Asked questions about the platform
Are there extra points for exceptional performance?
One of the scopes of this competition is to identify and promote local cybersecurity
talents. As such, at the end of the competition certain aspects of a teams' performance
may be awarded extra points. Such metrics include but are not limited to awards for:
● Solving all the challenges from a category
● Solving all the challenges from all participated categories
● Having the fastest individual challenge solve
● Having the best average times of challenges solves
● Best writeup submissions
For any such extra points that may be awarded there will be a public announcement being
made prior to informing all the participating teams.
Where can I get some hints?
If you get stuck on a challenge, it is always best to move along and come back to it later if
time permits. However, here are a few things that could help you out in getting unstuck or
getting some help!
● Always check the description of the challenge for any hidden pointers you may have
missed. Be it in the name, short and detailed description etc
● Check for hints regularly by visiting the challenge page
● Identify the challenge components and description keywords and google them for
hints
If all else fails let our onsite support engineers know, by providing details on where
exactly you are stuck at a particular challenge. If enough people are stuck at the same
place a public announcement will be made onsite with hints and pointers to get you
unstuck.
How does the leaderboard resolve score ties?
The leaderboard determines the position of the players in the ranks in the following way:
● Team with higher points
● Team that got the points first
14
● The oldest registered team
Is publishing or streaming solutions for targets allowed?
You are not allowed to publish or stream solutions of the challenges before the competition
ends. Doing so will get you disqualified without warning.

Hack The Box Meetup-(Free for Participants)
Welcome & Introduction (5–10 minutes)
You will greet all participants and provide a brief overview of the session's structure. Explain
that this is an opportunity for participants to present the Hack the Box (HTB) challenges
they have been working on, discuss their approaches, and share their experiences with the
group.
Additionally, offer a brief Ethical Reminder emphasizing the importance of ethical hacking.
Remind everyone to respect the methods of others, avoid spoilers, and focus on discussing
the process rather than giving away the full solution.
Open the floor for questions from other participants after each presentation. Encourage
everyone to ask about the techniques, tools, and obstacles that were discussed during the
presentation. If someone has solved the same challenge differently, they are encouraged to
briefly share their own approach, which helps foster a collaborative learning environment.
HTB Meetup Groups are local hacking communities that gather together to connect with like-
minded people, share knowledge, learn from each other, and evolve into cyber-ready humans.
Back in 2019, Julio Urena, an HTB Community member back then and an HTB employee
today, reached out to us about hosting a local hacking Meetup in his location with the support
of Hack The Box. Straight away, we agreed to support this initiative with a community-first
mindset as a driver.
Therefore, we started reaching out to loyal HTB Members to host their hacking sessions
globally by supporting them however we can.
Today, less than 3 years later, we count 48 Meetup Groups in over 32 countries, supporting
them to spread the hacking knowledge across Europe, North America, South America,
Africa, Asia, and Australia.

HTB Meetup Groups are local hacking communities that connect with like-minded people,
share knowledge, learn from each other, and evolve into cyber-ready humans.
Our ultimate goal is to be able to upskill everyone globally through these sessions.
Join a Hack The Box Meetup group in your area here.
Depending on each group's skill level and needs, we choose together with the organizer
different forms of events:
HTB Meetup Events started as an on-site activity back in 2019. However, after the COVID-
19 outbreak, we decided to move everything to virtual till restrictions would allow us to go
back on-site. That skyrocketed all groups!
During the pandemic, people from all around the world used Meetups to connect with other
hackers virtually, learn, and upskill regardless of their location and local restrictions.
This resulted in 410 Events with 10,578 members from 32 countries globally.
Today, Meetup Events might take place on-site or virtually and can be hosted bi-weekly,
bimonthly, or quarterly, depending on the needs of each group.
Join the upcoming Hack The Box Meetup event in your area here.
The Meetup groups are led and organized by one or more HTB Community members with
the support of Hack The Box.
• Meetup.com platform to notify everyone that a local group is created, book and
announce future events and agenda, gather interest and people and kick-off interaction
with each other
• Dedicated Labs, our Enterprise Service free for the purpose of the event, with all HTB
machines available
• Private Discord Channel for all organizers to connect, share ideas and get inspired
from other organizers
• Enterprise service is free for event purposes
• Swag and Service vouchers for the attendees
27
Event presenters may vary depending on the form of the event. It may be the group organizer,
a guest speaker, or any community member that has something awesome to share with their
group.
1. Technical Requirements
• Bring Your Machine (BYOM): Ensure you have a laptop or virtual machine capable
